John Harris may get out of the race for governor

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage –

John Harris told me today he might drop out of the governor’s race.

“I just want to see what the governor does, I think that’s fair. If the governor does fine I probably won’t run. There’s no reason to go after somebody if they’re doing a good job,” said Harris, a Republican state representative from Valdez.

Harris filed his letter of intent to run with the Alaska Public Offices Commission in July, just days after Sarah Palin announced her resignation. He said at the time he didn’t think anyone could have beat Palin in the Republican primary had she sought re-election.

Palin's book retainer: $1.25 million

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage --

Sarah Palin reported in financial disclosures out this morning that she received $1.25 million from publisher HarperCollins as "retainer for book."

The report doesn't give a date for when Palin received the money. But the disclosures cover money that Palin received during her final seven months as governor, from Jan. 1 to July 26.

These are the final disclosures she's required to file with the Alaska Public Offices Commission.

No other details are offered on the book deal, but a retainer would just be an upfront piece of it.

The disclosures also include Palin reporting $73,000 in salary and $6,370 in per diem during her final seven months before resigning as governor.

Her husband, Todd, reported receiving $34,086 during that time as a BP production operator and $32,260 from his commercial setnet fishing in Bristol Bay.

APOC staff says Palin has disclosed enough

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage –

Alaska Public Offices Commission staff says it’s now satisfied with Sarah Palin’s disclosures of her 2008 gifts and her husband’s Arctic Cat sponsorship.

APOC and Palin went back and forth this summer over just what had to be disclosed. Palin didn't want to reveal details of the Arctic Cat sponsorship, saying it was proprietary information, and also argued that gifts were not “received” until they were opened.

APOC disagreed with her on both those points and Palin filed a new disclosure last month, listing more gifts and providing some information in the disclosure about Todd Palin's Arctic Cat sponsorship, while pleading ignorance of specifics.

Palin reports gifts, not all details of Arctic Cat deal

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage --

Sarah Palin's new disclosure report lists gifts including a hand-painted plate with Palin's picture in the middle, a bible bound in goat skin, and "Not Your Daddy's Gun Case" -- a red twill 53" case with "Sarah" embroidered on it. The gifts were sent to Palin and members of her family by Lower 48 admirers.

Palin also gave the Alaska Public Offices Commission some information in the disclosure about her husband's Arctic Cat sponsorship, while pleading ignorance of specifics. APOC had asked her earlier this month to report benefits from the deal.

Palin's lawyer, Tom Van Flein, wrote to APOC that Palin "has not read the contract and does not know the specific terms of the contract.

NEWS FEED: The Mudflats

The Cat is Out of the Bag.

It looks like the Arctic Cat is out of the bag.  APOC speaks, and secrets will be revealed.

In one lingering issue, the Alaska Public Offices Commission has refused Palin’s request to keep secret the discounts that come from her husband’s Arctic Cat sponsorship. APOC also said Palin needs to disclose all the gifts she received [...]

From Kyle Hopkins in Anchorage --

Valdez Republican Rep. John Harris filed a letter of intent to run for governor with the Alaska Public Offices Commission today.

He’ll formally announce he’s running tomorrow, but it’s no secret. He’s made it clear in the past that he’d run if Palin didn’t.

“It’s a practical thing. I don’t know if anybody could have beat (Palin) in a primary race for governor. Maybe Lisa Murkowski, but not me,” Harris said in a quick phone interview today. “Now that she’s decided not to run, it’s basically an open seat.”

French files intent to run for governor, says it doesn't mean he's running

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage

Democratic state Sen. Hollis French filed an intent to run for governor today. But French said it’s just a technicality and doesn’t mean he will run for sure next year.

“It’s just simply a preliminary step towards making a final decision but also keeping the dialogue going...continuing the conversation I’ve been having with a lot of people about what sort of governor they want to have in the next election,” he said.

French, of Anchorage, said he filed the letter of intent with the Alaska Public Offices Commission. That allows him to legally start raising for a campaign. But French said he doesn’t intend to raise any money until he makes a final decision and a formal announcement of whether he will run for governor.

'Alaska waiting on Sarah Palin's plans'

From David Hulen in Anchorage --

That's the headline on a story at Politico today exploring whether the governor will seek re-election next year or pursue national aspirations. Not a lot new information in the piece, which has a mix of on-the-record interviews (Halcro, Ruedrich) and anonymous sources ("a former Palin staffer," "a Washington-based Democratic operative"). But it frames it a little differently than we've seen.

Excerpt:

Top Republicans and Democrats across Alaska are quietly lining up to run for governor amid growing speculation that Sarah Palin will not seek reelection in 2010.

No candidate, including Palin, has yet filed papers with the Alaska Public Offices Commission.

Palin asks for Arctic Cat disclosure exemption

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage --

Gov. Sarah Palin is telling the Alaska Public Offices Commission she doesn’t want to disclose the discount her husband, Todd, receives on purchases of Arctic Cat snowmachines.

“Todd Palin is entitled to discounts on purchases (as he has received the last 16 years as an Iron Dog race.) However, according to the terms of his sponsorship agreement, the exact amount of the discount is confidential as a proprietary trade secret,” the governor wrote APOC on Monday.

Palin’s letter said her husband is allowed to buy a snowmachine at manufacturer cost, without retail markup, and “the manufacturer cost is proprietary information.

Palin legal expense fund

From Erika Bolstad in Washington D.C. --

The website for Gov. Sarah Palin's legal expense fund is now up and running. Palin's longtime friend, Kristan Cole, is the trustee for the fund, which will cap donation at $150.

Here's a statement from Cole on the fund's website: "Over the past months it became increasingly clear that supporters of Governor Palin needed to help defend against the onslaught of frivolous attacks against her. These baseless accusations are designed to inhibit her ability to focus on the issues Alaskans truly care about and force massive personal debt on her and her family. I joined with fellow Alaskans in forming the Alaska Fund Trust to help alleviate the Governor's legal debt incurred while performing her job as well as eliminate the incentive for future attacks by her opponents.
