Knowles in D.C., talking energy

From Erika Bolstad in Washington D.C. –

Former Gov. Tony Knowles was one of nearly a dozen Alaskans in Washington D.C. today to talk alternative energy at an Interior Department conference.

Knowles, a Democrat who was Alaska governor from 1994 to 2002, was invited to the event in his capacity as the head of the Tulsa, Okla.-based National Energy Policy Institute. The institute is working with the Washington D.C.-based think tank Resources for the Future to develop a ranking system for various energy alternatives. When they’re finished with their work next year, Knowles said they hope to have a standard for assessing the cost-effectiveness for various types of energy – as well as their potential for reducing imported oil and greenhouse gas emissions.

Parnell talks with reporters

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage –

Gov. Sean Parnell met with the press today in a wide ranging discussion in his downtown Anchorage office. Here are some excerpts.

On Sarah Palin:

I think I have a calmer existence here than Gov. Palin experienced. Being able to speak with two, four, six, eight, ten, 13 of you instead of having a crush of national reporters. It’s easier in that sense for me to actually get to the issues before the state... She doesn’t call and offer advice. We have communicated a number of times on just personal issues, just greetings. We became personally acquainted with each other and just inquire about our families and the like.

Parnell ready to start raising campaign money

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage –

Gov. Sean Parnell, who has made it clear he’ll be in next year's governor’s race, today filed the letter of intent that formally brings him in and lets him start raising campaign cash.

Other gubernatorial hopefuls who've filed the letters with the Alaska Public Offices Commission are Democrats Ethan Berkowitz, Hollis French, Bob Poe, Robert Rosenfeld (who has since dropped out of the race) and Republicans John Harris and Bill Walker.

Parnell, of course, is a Republican. Here’s the statement he sent out today about his formal entrance into the govern's race: “We have a lot more work to do as we position our economy for growth and our people for opportunity.

In-state gasline: at least $3.93 billion

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage –

Building an in-state natural gas pipeline from the North Slope down the Parks Highway to the Point Mackenzie area would cost an estimated $3.93 billion, the governor’s point man on the idea told state legislators at a briefing this morning.

Harry Noah told them that it would cost $480 million more to build such a pipeline down the Richardson Highway, because going that route would require an additional 90-plus miles.

It’s all pretty theoretical at this point, although Enstar is looking at it and there’s a lot of interest among state legislators in trying to push the idea forward.

How will Alaska's senators vote on Sotomayor?

From Erika Bolstad in Washington D.C. --

So far, Alaska's senators aren't saying whether they'll vote for Judge Sonia Sotomayor, Obama's first nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski is expected to give a speech tomorrow on the Senate floor, where she'll indicate how she'll vote, said her spokesman, Mike Brumas. Democratic Sen. Mark Begich probably won't announce his intentions until he votes, said spokeswoman Julie Hasquet. The full Senate vote is expected as soon as Thursday.

Both Murkowski and Begich have said they want to be sure of Sotomayor's stance on Second Amendment issues.

But even without the votes of the two Alaskans, there is little doubt Sotomayor will be confirmed as the nation's first Hispanic Supreme Court justice -- Sotomayor already has the support of six Republicans.

Sean Parnell questions Young's candidacy

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage–

Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell isn’t saying what office he will run for next year.

But he questioned the chances of his old campaign foe, Don Young, being re-elected.

Parnell told me in an email today that he acknowledged the past effectiveness of Young, Alaska's lone representative in the U.S. House. But Parnell said he was surprised by Young's decision to file yesterday to run next year for his 20th term in Congress.

“Where Don Young’s own Republican members of the House took away his clout by removing him from committee leadership, Young will be hard pressed to explain why Alaskans should send him back in 2010,” Parnell said.

Weyhrauch case to be heard in front of Supreme Court

From Erika Bolstad in Washington D.C. --

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to review part of former Alaska Rep. Bruce Weyhrauch’s pending criminal case.

The court will look at one specific area: whether prosecutors must prove Weyhrauch violated a state disclosure law to convict him on federal mail-fraud statutes.

Weyhrauch, awaiting trial on federal corruption charges, has asked the Supreme Court to overturn an appeals court decision that directly applied the federal mail-fraud statute to his case. At issue is one count in Weyhrauch’s 2007 indictment. It charged him with violating the federal mail fraud statute by depriving Alaskans of his honest services when he served as a legislator in 2006.

Begich, like Murkowski, asked Sotomayor about guns

From Erika Bolstad in Washington D.C. –

Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, got his chance today to meet with Judge Sonia Sotomayor, President Barack Obama's first Supreme Court pick.

"It was a good discussion and I had an opportunity to talk to her about her process in making decisions, and understanding more about her as a person," Begich said.

Like his Republican counterpart, Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Begich’s main question was about the Second Amendment. And like Murkowski – who met with Sotomayor last week -- he wanted to make it clear: Alaskans have a keen interest in the right to bear arms.

"I did a little education, I hope, on Alaska issues and what concerns we have around Second Amendment issues, around Alaska Native rights…and also environmental and development issues.

Murkowski, after meeting with Sotomayor: "Overall it was a very good conversation."

From Erika Bolstad in Washington D.C. –

Sen. Lisa Murkowski met with Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor Thursday, asking the president’s first high court pick point blank: what did you mean about the now-infamous "wise Latina" statement in your speeches?

"When she was talking about how she arrives at some of her decisions, I asked: how do you make the separation from your personal experiences, your life experiences? And I specifically brought up the phrase that has generated some level of controversy. And she talked about that at some length, about how who we are allows you to have certain antennae that listen.

Pipeline project: "Very important to the President"

From Erika Bolstad in Washington D.C. --

Everyone seems to have a reaction to the Exxon-TransCanada announcement, so let's lead with the one from the Obama Administration, via Interior Secretary Ken Salazar:

"This is a significant step forward on a project very important to the President and the Department of the Interior as a way to get American energy to the lower 48," Salazar said in a statement. "We recognize there are two very strong project proposals, both aiming toward a 2010 open season and both now supported by major gas producers that control vast proven reserves of North Slope gas. We look forward to working with all stakeholders involved with this project.
