Palin, Huckabee and yesterday's elections

From Erika Bolstad in Washington D.C. --

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's role in several East Coast elections got a lot of attention in recent weeks, especially when she threw her support behind a third-party conservative candidate over the Republican in the NY-23 congressional seat. (The Democrat, Bill Owens, won the race.)

Here's what Palin had to say (on Facebook, of course) about the defeat of the candidate she backed, Doug Hoffman: "The race for New York’s 23rd District is not over, just postponed until 2010. The issues of this election have always centered on the economy – on the need for fiscal restraint, smaller government, and policies that encourage jobs.

Do you know where your governor is? A state-by-state rundown

From the Associated Press --

After Gov. Mark Sanford disappeared on a seven-day trip to see a woman in Argentina with whom he was having an affair, Associated Press reporters in 40 states contacted their governors' offices to ask: What's the governor doing right now? The AP also asked for a copy of each governor's complete schedule for the day, not just public events.

Here's a glance at each state's response:

___

ALABAMA: Gov. Bob Riley's spokesman said he was landing in Seattle after an overseas economic development trip. He also released the governor's Friday schedule, mostly blocked out so he could rest from the trip.

CNN poll: Huckabee, Palin, Romney all bunched together

From David Hulen in Anchorage --

This today from CNN , three years before the next election:

A new national poll of Republicans suggests that there's no front runner at this extremely early moment in the next race for the White House. Three possible candidates are all bunched at the top of a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Tuesday.

The survey suggests that 22 percent of Republicans would most likely support former Arkansas governor and former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee for their party's presidential nomination in 2012. Twenty-one percent say they would most likely back Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, with an equal number supporting former Massachusetts governor and former White House hopeful Mitt Romney.

Palin: Arkansas recruiting-office shootings lacked proper attention

From David Hulen in Anchorage --

Gov. Palin has weighed in on the shooting of two soldiers outside of an Arkansas Army-Navy recruiting center. One soldier was killed and another hospitalized, and the suspect, who had converted to Islam, told police he was angry about the killing of Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan. Palin suggests news media hasn't given the Arkansas attack adequate attention compared with the killing of Kansas abortion doctor George Tiller. From SarahPAC:

Governor Palin Statement on William Long

"The stories of two very different lives with similar fates crossed through the media's hands yesterday - both equally important but one lacked the proper attention.

Palin legal defense fund

From Lisa Demer in Anchorage --

There's buzz today about a new legal fund created for Gov. Sarah Palin. But the family spokeswoman says it's not sanctioned by Palin.

"It’s not official. Neither the governor nor her attorney can accept monies from a group like this. There is one that is the process of being established," said Palin spokeswoman Meg Stapleton.

Clayton Paslay, who splits his time between Texas and California, said in a telephone interview that he's a big supporter of Palin and last year started a political action committee to support her and other conservatives, including former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. Then he heard Fox News Channel host Bill O'Reilly say Palin needed help with her legal bills. So, about a week ago, he added a legal fund for Palin to his Web site.

Ballot measure 4, redux

This from reporter Elizabeth Bluemink on our Pebble Blog --

Alaska blogger and Pebble mine opponent Shannyn Moore two days ago wrote a provocative blog post (it also appears on the Huffington Post) about Tim Griffin, an Outside Republican strategist and former DOJ attorney who mentioned to an Arkansas journalist that he worked on the anti-Ballot Measure 4 media campaign last year.

Moore basically traces his past political activities and questions why Griffin would come to Alaska for the “clean water” Measure 4 fight.

Begich joins "Moderate Dems"

From Erika Bolstad in Washington D.C. --

Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, is finding his place in the U.S. Senate, and it appears to be right in the middle. His office announced today that he joined a newly formed caucus of moderate Senate Democrats, called the "Moderate Dems Working Group."

They'll meet every other Tuesday before the weekly Democratic Caucus lunched to discuss legislative strategies and ideas, Begich's office said. Their current focus? The upcoming federal budget negotiations federal budget negotiations and "the importance of passing a fiscally responsible spending plan in the Senate," Begich's statement said.

The group is led by Sens.

The Palin 2012 Draft. Let the Games Begin.

It has happened.  The first official group to register to raise money to draft Sarah Palin for President in 2012 has reared its head.  “Where is this group located?” you might be asking yourself.  Wasilla?  The neighboring town of Palmer?  Somewhere in Utah? Oklahoma? Arkansas?
“Nope.  Keep guessing,”  I tell you.
“Alabama?  North Carolina?  Texas?”

'The conservative base of the party isn't going to forget her.'

From David Hulen in Anchorage --

Odds & ends:

> As the Conservative Political Action Conference continues in Washington, CNN released a new poll on Friday showing Gov. Palin as the front-runner among Republicans for the next presidential nomination. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was next, within the margin of error. From the CNN story:

While the CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll doesn't indicate a clear front-runner, it does suggest there's a gender gap among rank-and-file Republicans.

"Among GOP men, the same pattern emerges -- no clear advantage for Palin, Huckabee or Romney. But among Republican women, it's a different story. Palin has a 10-point edge among Republican women, winning 32 percent support among them to 22 percent for Huckabee and 20 percent for Romney," [CNN Polling Director Keating] Holland said.
