Palin, Huckabee and yesterday's elections

From Erika Bolstad in Washington D.C. --

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's role in several East Coast elections got a lot of attention in recent weeks, especially when she threw her support behind a third-party conservative candidate over the Republican in the NY-23 congressional seat. (The Democrat, Bill Owens, won the race.)

Here's what Palin had to say (on Facebook, of course) about the defeat of the candidate she backed, Doug Hoffman: "The race for New York’s 23rd District is not over, just postponed until 2010. The issues of this election have always centered on the economy – on the need for fiscal restraint, smaller government, and policies that encourage jobs.

Murkowski gives the GOP response to Obama speech on Climate Change

From Erika Bolstad in Washington D.C.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, gave the Republican response today to President Barack Obama's speech
to a UN climate change panel.

But she spent most of the time elaborating on her efforts to force the Environmental Protection Agency to hold off for a year on regulating so-called "stationary" emitters of greenhouse gases, such as power plants.

In her remarks to reporters (over a conference call) Murkowski warned that in the absence of comprehensive legislation from Congress addressing greenhouse gas emissions, the EPA would fill the void. "Just the idea of this amendment has caused some consternation, and there are some who would really rather avoid taking this vote.

Palin future

From David Hulen in Anchorage --

Gov. Sarah Palin hands over the keys to the governor's mansion to Sean Parnell tomorrow, and, once again, there's a lot of national media attention coming our way. The bulk of it around the question of what lies ahead. Some of it:

> The CBS Early Show this morning had three Republicans debating Palin's future. GOP strategist Bay Buchanan, commentator and author Ann Coulter and author and NewMajority.com founder David Frum argue over whether Palin's departure with nearly a year-and-a-half left in her term does her in as a national candidate. (Buchanan: "It will hurt her badly in the long run.

Washington Post/ABC News poll: Palin 'remains a deeply polarizing figure' nationally

From David Hulen in Anchorage --

A new national poll shows Gov. Palin remains a polarizing figure nationally. While Republicans continue to view her favorably, her popularity has dipped within her party, and she's viewed negatively among Democrats and independents. The poll was among 1,001 adults nationwide on July 15-18.

The top of the Post's story:

As Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin prepares for the next stage of her political career, a majority of Americans hold an unfavorable view of her, and there is broad public doubt about her leadership skills and understanding of complex issues, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Poe files intent to run for governor

From the Associated Press --

A former Department of Administration commissioner has filed his intent to be Alaska's next governor.

Bob Poe filed the notice Wednesday at the Division of Elections Office in Anchorage.

The 54-year-old Democrat says Alaska needs a governor that will unite the people of Alaska and not be focused on their personal political career.

He says he knew he was running for governor when Gov. Sarah Palin returned from the campaign trail as GOP presidential candidate John McCain's running mate last year. Poe said he could tell she had left Alaska behind her and was focused on national politics.

Another Palin ethics complaint filed by McLeod

From the Associated Press in Anchorage --

Another ethics complaint has been filed against Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, less than a week before her resignation.

The complaint filed Monday alleges Palin violated ethics law by failing to submit complete gift disclosure forms in a timely manner.

The complaint is the 19th ethics grievance against Palin, most filed after she was named the GOP vice presidential candidate last year. Most of the complaints have been dismissed.

The latest is the sixth filed by fellow Republican Andree McLeod, an outspoken critic of the governor. Three of the cases have been dismissed and two others, including one filed last week, remain active.

Palin steps down as Alaska governor on Sunday, with 17 months left to her first term.

Palin second among Republicans in new Gallup Poll

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage --

Sarah Palin will no longer be the governor of Alaska in a week and a half, but 21 percent of Republicans and "Republican leaning independents" want her next title to be president.

That's according to a newly released Gallup poll taken July 10-12 which asked Republicans to choose which of six possible candidates for their party's nomination they'd be most likely to support in 2012. Take the poll with a grain of salt: the sample size is just 455 Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (Gallup puts the margin of error at plus or minus 5 percent.)

Mitt Romney led the poll with 26 percent choosing him.

Murkowski, other GOP senators summoned to White House to talk about health care

From Erika Bolstad in Washington D.C. --

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, was one of several Republican senators who on Wednesday was invited to the White House to talk about health care.

"It was a good opportunity for the four of us to express our concerns with the direction that health care reform has taken in the Senate, and the President listened," Murkowski said in a statement after the meeting. "We raised a number of issues, including how quickly the Senate is moving on a health bill that would raise taxes on small businesses, and modeling a new federal health plan on our broken Medicare system."

Palin sparks internal GOP warfare. Again.

From Erika Bolstad in Washington D.C. --

The Vanity fair article about Gov. Sarah Palin has taken on a life of its own, reports Politico, which has delved into some of backstabbing, eating-their-own politics going on within the GOP right now as the party looks for a leader.

From Politico: "The vitriol also suggests the degree to which Palin remains a Rorschach test not simply to Republicans nationally but within a tight circle of elite operatives and commentators, many of whom seem ready to carry their arguments in 2012. Was Palin a fresh talent whose debut was mishandled by self-serving campaign insiders, or an eccentric "diva" who had no business on the national stage? Going forward, does she offer a conservative and charismatic face for a demoralized and star-less party? Or is she a loose cannon who should be consigned to the tabloids where she can reside in perpetuity with other flash-in-the-pan sensations?"
