Palin, Huckabee and yesterday's elections

From Erika Bolstad in Washington D.C. --

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's role in several East Coast elections got a lot of attention in recent weeks, especially when she threw her support behind a third-party conservative candidate over the Republican in the NY-23 congressional seat. (The Democrat, Bill Owens, won the race.)

Here's what Palin had to say (on Facebook, of course) about the defeat of the candidate she backed, Doug Hoffman: "The race for New York’s 23rd District is not over, just postponed until 2010. The issues of this election have always centered on the economy – on the need for fiscal restraint, smaller government, and policies that encourage jobs.

New CNN poll numbers on Palin

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage --

A new CNN poll says 64 percent of those questioned feel Sarah Palin is a good role model for women. But more than 7 of every ten people felt she is not qualified to be president.

CNN reports Republicans appeared split with 52 percent saying she is qualified to be president and 47 percent disagreeing with that view.

Mike Huckabee was the candidate that received the most support in the poll among Republicans saying who they would be likely to support as president in 2012.

Palin was seven points behind him at 25 percent but four points ahead of Mitt Romney.

Rasmussen poll: Palin slipping against Huckabee and Romney

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage –

Sarah Palin’s poll numbers have dropped behind both Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney as a potential candidate for the 2012 Republican nomination, a new Rasmussen poll says. The national polling firm said Palin would be trounced if she went head-to-head with either fellow former governor today.

Palin trailed Huckabee by 20 points (55 percent to 35 percent) in the head-to-head among likely Republican primary voters. She was down 15 points against Romney (52 percent to 37 percent).

But obviously any fight for the Republican nomination would not be between just two candidates squaring off against one another.

Rasmussen said that, when given a list of potential 2012 Republican candidates to choose from, 29 percent of the Republicans polled said they would vote Huckabee, 24 percent Romney and 18 percent Palin.

Palin second among Republicans in new Gallup Poll

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage --

Sarah Palin will no longer be the governor of Alaska in a week and a half, but 21 percent of Republicans and "Republican leaning independents" want her next title to be president.

That's according to a newly released Gallup poll taken July 10-12 which asked Republicans to choose which of six possible candidates for their party's nomination they'd be most likely to support in 2012. Take the poll with a grain of salt: the sample size is just 455 Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (Gallup puts the margin of error at plus or minus 5 percent.)

Mitt Romney led the poll with 26 percent choosing him.

From Kyle Hopkins in Anchorage --

Forty percent of Republican voters nationwide say Gov. Sarah Palin hurt her chances of winning the party’s nomination for president in 2012 by resigning as governor, according to a new poll from Rasmussen Reports.

The national polling firm conducted a telephone survey of likely GOP voters after Palin’s surprise announcement that she’s leaving the job. Only 24 percent said quitting helps her chances. Another 28 percent said it doesn't matter either way.

CNN poll: Huckabee, Palin, Romney all bunched together

From David Hulen in Anchorage --

This today from CNN , three years before the next election:

A new national poll of Republicans suggests that there's no front runner at this extremely early moment in the next race for the White House. Three possible candidates are all bunched at the top of a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Tuesday.

The survey suggests that 22 percent of Republicans would most likely support former Arkansas governor and former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee for their party's presidential nomination in 2012. Twenty-one percent say they would most likely back Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, with an equal number supporting former Massachusetts governor and former White House hopeful Mitt Romney.

Palin fourth in Fox poll

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage --

CQ Politics is reporting on a new Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll that has Mike Huckabee as the current top choice among Republicans to be the party's presidential nominee in 2012.

Huckabee was first choice among 20 percent of the Republicans surveyed in the poll. He was closely followed by Mitt Romney at 18 percent. Next was Newt Gingrich at 14 percent and Palin closely behind him with 13 percent of the support.

All those candidates are actually fairly close together considering the margin of error, which is a high 6 percent since this part of the poll only counted the 274 Republicans who were surveyed.

Palin legal defense fund

From Lisa Demer in Anchorage --

There's buzz today about a new legal fund created for Gov. Sarah Palin. But the family spokeswoman says it's not sanctioned by Palin.

"It’s not official. Neither the governor nor her attorney can accept monies from a group like this. There is one that is the process of being established," said Palin spokeswoman Meg Stapleton.

Clayton Paslay, who splits his time between Texas and California, said in a telephone interview that he's a big supporter of Palin and last year started a political action committee to support her and other conservatives, including former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. Then he heard Fox News Channel host Bill O'Reilly say Palin needed help with her legal bills. So, about a week ago, he added a legal fund for Palin to his Web site.

'The conservative base of the party isn't going to forget her.'

From David Hulen in Anchorage --

Odds & ends:

> As the Conservative Political Action Conference continues in Washington, CNN released a new poll on Friday showing Gov. Palin as the front-runner among Republicans for the next presidential nomination. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was next, within the margin of error. From the CNN story:

While the CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll doesn't indicate a clear front-runner, it does suggest there's a gender gap among rank-and-file Republicans.

"Among GOP men, the same pattern emerges -- no clear advantage for Palin, Huckabee or Romney. But among Republican women, it's a different story. Palin has a 10-point edge among Republican women, winning 32 percent support among them to 22 percent for Huckabee and 20 percent for Romney," [CNN Polling Director Keating] Holland said.
