Parnell appoints Tammie Wilson to the state House

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage --

Gov. Sean Parnell just announced that he's appointing Tammie Wilson to take North Pole Republican John Coghill's seat in the state House.

The seat's open because Parnell appointed Coghill to the state Senate seat vacated by Gene Therriault's decision to take a job as an adviser to Parnell.

Wilson is a Fairbanks North Star Borough Assemblywoman. She lost a close race for Fairbanks borough mayor to Luke Hopkins earlier this month.

Local Republicans suggested three names for Parnell to choose from: Wilson, North Pole Mayor Doug Isaacson and former

Harry Noah resigned?

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage –

Fairbanks Rep. Jay Ramras says the governor’s in-state natural gas pipeline czar, Harry Noah, has resigned. But the governor’s office says it’s not so.

“Harry called me and said he resigned. Then (Gov. Sean Parnell’s legislative director) Jerry Gallagher called me and confirmed it as well,” Ramras told me in an email.

Parnell spokeswoman Sharon Leighow, however, said the governor’s office has not received a resignation letter and so considers him still in the job.

Leighow also said the governor has not asked for Noah to resign. Noah himself hasn’t returned my calls or an email about it.

Ramras today sent a letter (

Parnell on Palin's book

From Erika Bolstad in Washington D.C. --

So has Gov. Sean Parnell read his predecessor's memoir? He doesn't have his hands on a copy of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's book yet, Parnell said Monday. The order is in, though, and the book's due out Tuesday.

"I promised to buy it, and I understand that my wife has ordered it from Amazon," Parnell said, "but I have not received it."

Richard Foster's son chosen to replace him

NOME, Alaska (AP) — Neal Foster has been appointed to a state House seat to replace his late father, Rep. Richard Foster, who died last month.

Gov. Sean Parnell made the announcement in Nome on Tuesday.

Neal Foster, a Democrat, will serve District 39, an area which stretches from Hooper Bay to Nome.

The 37-year-old Foster is the owner of Foster Properties in Nome, and is a current member of the Nome City Council.

He must be confirmed by a simple majority of House Democrats.
The Alaska Democratic Party sent three names to Parnell as possible replacements for Richard Foster. The other two were Ralph "Weaver" Ivanoff of Unalakleet, a commercial fisherman and a tribal administrator, and Sam Towarak of Unalakleet, an educator in northwest Alaska.

John Harris may get out of the race for governor

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage –

John Harris told me today he might drop out of the governor’s race.

“I just want to see what the governor does, I think that’s fair. If the governor does fine I probably won’t run. There’s no reason to go after somebody if they’re doing a good job,” said Harris, a Republican state representative from Valdez.

Harris filed his letter of intent to run with the Alaska Public Offices Commission in July, just days after Sarah Palin announced her resignation. He said at the time he didn’t think anyone could have beat Palin in the Republican primary had she sought re-election.

Parnell talks with reporters

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage –

Gov. Sean Parnell met with the press today in a wide ranging discussion in his downtown Anchorage office. Here are some excerpts.

On Sarah Palin:

I think I have a calmer existence here than Gov. Palin experienced. Being able to speak with two, four, six, eight, ten, 13 of you instead of having a crush of national reporters. It’s easier in that sense for me to actually get to the issues before the state... She doesn’t call and offer advice. We have communicated a number of times on just personal issues, just greetings. We became personally acquainted with each other and just inquire about our families and the like.

Coghill confirmed, Bunde new minority leader

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage-

The nine state Senate Republicans today unanimously confirmed John Coghill to take North Pole Republican Sen. Gene Therriault's seat.

Gov. Sean Parnell earlier appointed Coghill, a Republican state representative from North Pole, to take the Senate seat that opened when Therriault resigned for a job advising Parnell on energy issues.

Coghill will caucus with the three members of the all-Republican Senate minority instead of the bipartisan Senate majority.

Therriault had been the Senate minority leader, a position taken by Anchorage Sen. Con Bunde.

Naneng on Parnell: “he has been very receptive to the issues we have raised."

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage --

Gov. Sean Parnell’s appearance at the Association of Village Council Presidents convention this week received a decent review from AVCP president Myron Naneng, who was a blistering critic of Sarah Palin.

“Knowing that he will need the support of the villages in the upcoming election, I know he is making a concerted effort to reach out,” Naneng said after Parnell’s speech at the Bethel event. “He has been very receptive to the issues we have raised. In the past when we spoke with the then-Governor Palin, she did not seem to know that rural Alaska existed.”

Parnell ready to start raising campaign money

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage –

Gov. Sean Parnell, who has made it clear he’ll be in next year's governor’s race, today filed the letter of intent that formally brings him in and lets him start raising campaign cash.

Other gubernatorial hopefuls who've filed the letters with the Alaska Public Offices Commission are Democrats Ethan Berkowitz, Hollis French, Bob Poe, Robert Rosenfeld (who has since dropped out of the race) and Republicans John Harris and Bill Walker.

Parnell, of course, is a Republican. Here’s the statement he sent out today about his formal entrance into the govern's race: “We have a lot more work to do as we position our economy for growth and our people for opportunity.

Parnell wants state to cover college and job training costs

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage –

Gov. Sean Parnell just said he wants to start an ambitious new scholarship program: the state would pay 100 percent of the college or job training tuition at Alaska postsecondary institutions for every Alaska high school student who graduates with an “A” average (and takes four years of math, language, and science, as well as three years of social studies.)

Such students who graduate with a “B” average could get the state to pay 75 percent of their tuition covered -- even “C-plus” grads could get 50 percent.

“No matter who you are, no matter where you live, no matter what your personal circumstances, you can get a college education or you can get the job training you need to be a vital part of our workforce,” Parnell said as he announced the proposal this morning at West High in Anchorage.
