Flake could be big help to fellow GOPers

[img_assist|nid=1726|title=U.S. Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Chandler)|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=160|height=195]U.S. Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Chandler) probably doesn't have to worry about re-election. The 6th Congressional District is reliably Republican, and voters there returned Flake to Congress by a 50% margin in 2006. Also, thus far Flake has $1,820 on hand for every dollar his opponent, Chris Gramazio, has in his war chest. If Flake outspends his rival by a 100:1 ratio this cycle, he will still have well over $1 million in his re-election fund. That puts him in an excellent position to help out Republican incumbents and candidates who face tougher battles this year.

“Definitely,” said Matthew Specht, Flake’s Deputy Chief of Staff, when asked if other Republicans would be recipients of Flake’s largesse this cycle. “We have contributed to a lot of campaigns already.”

State Sen. Pres. Tim Bee (R-Tucson) has gotten $2,000 from Flake's committee this cycle for his 8th Congressional District challenge of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Tucson), but so far he is the only Republican candidate in Arizona to receive funds from Flake in 2008. U.S. Rep. John Shadegg (R-Phoenix), who faces the toughest re-election challenge he has had to contend with in Democrat Bob Lord, got $1,455 in his 2004 bid, but nothing so far in 2008. However, Specht said that will change.

"Once the primary is settled in CD5, we'll certainly be supportive of whoever wins there," said Specht, referring to the six-way race for the Republican nomination in the 5th Congressional District. The winner there will face U.S. Rep. Harry Mitchell (D-Tempe), a "frontline" Democrat who already has over $1 million in the bank.
