Group finds AZ Legislature could switch party hands in November

The National Conference of State Legislatures, a bipartisan organization that gives support to state legislators and legislatures nationwide, is calling Arizona a "state to watch" for a shift in party control of one or both chambers.

"At least 28 of the 84 legislative chambers with elections this year can be called battlegrounds with either party having a chance to emerge with a majority," read the article on the NCSL's website.

Tim Storey, an expert at the NCSL, said, "History suggests that success for either Senator John McCain or Senator Barack Obama will produce a coattail effect, and [this]is especially true in presidential battleground states like Ohio and Pennsylvania."

Arizona is not on any non-Democrat's list of presidential battleground states, but that doesn't mean it is immune to the effects of the national political climate, and a late surge by either Obama or McCain, who national polls currently show in a dead-heat, could have an impact down ballot in Arizona.

Though the state Senate may be a tall order for the minority Democrats to take over, they are only five seats shy of majority status in the House, making the fight for control of that chamber one indeed to watch.
