UPDATED: Hermes camp denies involvement in sign stealing

CORRECTION: The original version of this story indicated Fulton Brock signs were stolen by the Hermes supporter. The story has been amended.

The Ed Hermes campaign did not order or have knowledge of a supporter sealing campaign signs, a campaign spokesman told PolitickerAZ.com, after the Brock camp put out a release indicating a Hermes backer may have been engaged in the theft of signs from another campaign.

"We just found out about it," said Wylie Timmerman, spokesman for the campaign. "Our campaign doesn't engage in that sort of behavior."

Earlier Thursday, the Brock campaign put out a press release that included a memo written Det. Tim Miller of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, in which Miller described his apprehension of a young woman who was tearing down the sign of a Republican legislative candidate in Tempe last Friday.

"When asked what she was doing, she told me she was collecting unauthorized campaign signs," wrote Miller, according to the press release. "When asked why they were not authorized, she explained they were privately funded and were not paid for by the person's political party. When asked her name, she identified herself as Lori Lieberman. Lori told me the University Young Democrats had instructed them to collect the unauthorized signs."

Jason Rose, whose firm Rose and Allyn PR is handling Brock's campaign, denounced the theft.

"This type of behavior if it is occurring is not only juvenile, it is illegal," he said in the release. "Hermes’ failure to denounce such apparent immaturity and irresponsibility, whether it involves our signs or anyone else’s, is yet another example among many why he does not have the experience, judgment or maturity" to be county supervisor, Rose said.

Timmerman said the campaign doesn't condone sign stealing, and turned the issue back on Brock.

"Brock's just desperate, and he's trying to generate scandal," Timmerman said.

UPDATED 10/24: Wylie Timmerman wrote in an email to PolitickerAZ.com:

"The allegations that this young woman stole a Fulton Brock sign are baseless and not worthy of print. Neither Tempe Police, The Arizona Republic, nor even Jason Rose allege that the woman stole one of Brock's signs. The signs she stole were completely unrelated to this campaign.Of course, Ed Hermes and his campaign reject and condemn the practice of stealing campaign signs, but this woman's case is in no way related to our campaign.

"It's clear that Jason Rose is simply trying to link this campaign to an existing story without offering any additional evidence that one of Brock's signs was stolen by the woman or that his signs have even been stolen at all."
