Maricopa independent counsel not pursuing complaint against Dems

Jeffrey Messing, the attorney hired by Maricopa County to investigate a complaint Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas's re-election campaign filed against the Arizona Democratic Party and an independent expenditure group, has decided not to pursue the matter further, he told PolitickerAZ.com Monday.

"We are closing the investigation and won't be proceeding further," Messing said.

The complaint alleged that a radio ad by the group Arizonans for Responsible Law Enforcement attacking Thomas during his re-election fight failed to fully disclose the source of the ad's funding, which the Thomas campaign said came directly from the Arizona Democratic Party.

Messing, though, said the evidence wasn't there.

"[The Arizona Democratic Party] provided us with a copy of the ad and in fact the disclaimers were there," said Messing. "The allegations were factually inaccurate."
