AZ Dems break silence to rip Brewer on lobbyist appointments

The Arizona Democratic Party issued its first salvo against Jan Brewer Tuesday, putting out a press release that takes the current Arizona secretary of state and presumptive next governor to task for filling her transition team with lobbyists.

"In her first public move, future Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has thrown wide her doors to lobbyists," read the release in part.

The attack ends a long post-election stretch of relative silence from the state Democratic Party, which has been keeping a low profile after losing legislative seats on Nov. 4, despite a large money advantage over the Arizona Republican Party.

Emily DeRose, the party's spokeswoman, was back to form as well, saying in the release, "Brewer's transition team reads like a list of Who's Who among Arizona lobbyists. Tom DeLay couldn't have cooked up a better list himself."

The release mentioned 19 transition team members who the Democrats say are registered lobbyists, including transition director Chuck Coughlin, president of the lobbying and PR firm HighGround, as well as deputy transition directors Doug Cole, also of HighGround, and Jay Heiler, who runs his own PR and lobbying firm, Heiler Public Affairs.

"I can only hope there's enough seats at the table for Arizona families after all these lobbyists have taken most of the chairs," DeRose continued. "Arizonans deserve better."
