Verschoor explores for state treasurer

State Sen. Thayer Verschoor  is the latest lawmaker to set sail upon the choppy political seas with an exploratory committee. The probable destination: The state treasurer's seat in 2010.
Verschoor, a Gilbert Republican, is one of 10 senators hitting their eight-year term limit, and thus looking at other job prospects.
The senator said he won't seek the treasurer job if the current occupant, Dean Martin, seeks a second term. Verschoor said he would have other options if that were the case, although he didn't elaborate. However, Martin is widely expected to get into the governor's race.

SWAG Re: 2010 Arizona Democratic Primaries

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Tucson Weekly has its "Scramble Watch" to engage in wild political speculation. Here we just call it SWAG - "silly wild ass guesses" (with a measure of fact and solid rumors). Today's focus is on the potential and rumored Democratic candidates.

For those of you who would like to play along at home, here is a link to the Arizona Secretary of State's Campaign Finance - Committee Search page. For a general search, go to "committee search - by type" and use the "select" cursor to select "candidate" and "2010." When the page comes up, scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to find the most recent entry, and work upwards.

That’s Amore!

According to the Yellow Sheet, State Treasurer Dean Martina thinks that Attorney General Terry Goddard is conspiring against him!

Geez.

The conflict between the two is ongoing, but the current iteration is that Martin wants to be able to hire outside counsel, and Goddard has argued that this will lead to unnecessary expenses and could elevate disputes between state agencies into lawsuits. I’m betting that Martin is angry that Goddard’s office says “no” to his media stunts too often and he just wants to shop around for a lawyer who says “yes.”

Martin is now alleging that Goddard is trying to strong arm him by recruiting a candidate against him, one that works for his office.

Cherny and Nelson mentioned for AZ U.S. attorney

Among the names being floated as possible contenders to be appointed U.S. attorney for Arizona, Andrei Cherny's keeps popping up.

Cherny, the Democratic adviser, speechwriter and author who is an assistant Arizona attorney general by day and all-arounder for the Obama team when called upon, is often mentioned as someone who would be a fit for the U.S. attorney position. He has semi-celebrity status in Arizona Democratic circles, and a law degree from U.C. Berkeley's Boalt Hall doesn't hurt.

Cherny offers preview of Obama policy book

DENVER -- Obama campaign adviser Andrei Cherny gave the Arizona delegates to the Democratic National Convention a small sneak peek at the book the presumptive Democratic nominee will release next week, to coincide with the Republican National Convention.

"It's going to be the most boring policy wonk best seller in the history of the United States," said Cherny, who had a hand in writing it.

Andrei Cherny is not a member of the Arizona delegation to the Democratic National Convention, but he is having an impact on the convention - and election - nonetheless.
