More legal drama between Maricopa County and the County Attorney's Office ...

On Tuesday, Wade Swanson, Maricopa County's director of the Office of General Litigation Services, told The Republic that County Attorney Andrew Thomas had not done “his legal homework” in appointing out-of-town lawyers to investigate Supervisor Don Stapley.

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office claims that Swanson didn't either.

Among the reasons the county would not approve contracts for Washington, D.C.,-based attorneys Joseph diGenova and Victoria Toensing was because they were not residents of Maricopa County “as required by statute.”

The citations Swanson produced to justify the statement were 1958 and 1979 Attorney General's opinions.

Barnett Lotstein, a spokesman in Thomas' office, said the opinions ...

And speaking of best buds (which I did below) . . .

Here's a photo of Vic Williams (R-LD26) hanging around with a few of his closest friends: Russell Pearce, J.D. Hayworth and Sheriff Joe Arpaio (Present but out of the shot, Andrew Thomas). That's Vic looking stern and resolute behind the big three.

The issue is immigration. With those folks sharing the microphone, you know the tone is harsh.

How harsh? The Republic, not known as a Republican-bashing publication or a bastion of liberalism, had this to say under the headline, "Pearce and crew fill leadership vacuum with bunk."

Because Congress has abdicated its responsibility to resolve illegal immigration, powers have stepped into their leadership vacuum.

County lawyer cites rescinded opinion in its legal analysis

So much for doing homework ...
On Tuesday, Wade Swanson, Maricopa County's director of the Office of General Litigation Services, told The Republic that County Attorney Andrew Thomas had not done “his legal homework” in appointing out-of-town lawyers to investigate Supervisor Don Stapley.
But apparently, neither had Swanson.
Among the reasons the county would not approve contracts for Washington, D.C.,-based attorneys Joseph diGenova and Victoria Toensing was because they were not residents of Maricopa County “as required by statute.”
Unfortunately, the legal citation Swanson produced to justify the statement was a 1979 Attorney General's opinion that was rescinded as inaccurate in 1988.
Thomas ...

County forgets to mention their own DOJ probe

Certain members of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors have been more than happy to mouth off about a U.S. Department of Justice investigation into the Sheriff's Office.
They forgot to mention they were under investigation, too.
Back in March, the Sheriff's Office 'fessed up right away that it was under investigation by the feds for possible civil rights violations.
But the board and county officials hid the fact that they've been under investigation by the same agency since March for possible civil-rights violations that involve failing to provide interpreters at public meetings.
Until Tuesday.
That's when the board's arch-nemesis, County Attorney Andrew Thomas blew ...

"Major announcement" from Andrew Thomas possible soon

Spinmeister Jason Rose has the Insider all atwitter with a recent Twitter post that indicates he’s got something up his sleeve.
The red-headed Rose, who ran Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas’ reelection campaign last year, posted this yesterday under his username, jasonrosepr: “Major announcement from maricopa county andrew thomas quite possible in next 45 days.”
Thomas for years has been rumored to have aspirations for higher office, including Attorney General and Governor. A few weeks back, Thomas told The Republic’s Editorial Board that he had no plans to run for a higher office.
Rose is mum on the matter, “To be continued. I ...

Tim Nelson joins Goddard's team

Phoenix attorney Tim Nelson is joining the Attorney General’s Office as its Chief Deputy Attorney General.
He will oversee the office's legal divisions, including criminal prosecutions, consumer fraud litigation and advice to state agencies.
Nelson, of north-central Phoenix, took on Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas in last years' election, but was walloped by the incumbent.

Nelson now works as senior counsel to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. He also has worked at Phoenix law firm Osborn Maledon, and from 2003 to 2008, as general counsel to former Gov. Janet Napolitano.
Observers say Nelson's hiring represents the AG's attempt to reach beyond the traditional, older Democratic party faithful, to pick ...
