Rep. Ray Barnes' angry ignorant rant

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

I briefly touched upon the comments of Rep. Ray Barnes during the recent special session in an earlier post, i.e., he said that the state could file for bankruptcy (as I explained, no, it cannot).

I had not seen Rep. Barnes' extended comments at the time. It turns out this whopper was part of an angry ignorant rant that has now gone viral since the video below was posted. This makes Sen. Sylvia Allen's "6,000 years" video look sane by comparison. The Daily Show is likely to catch up to this video when it comes back from hiatus since Arizona has been such fertile ground for comic material this year.

Will the last person to leave please remember to turn out the lights

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Arizona has gone from Governor Janet Napolitano and the Republican legislature enacting a ten percent income tax cut in 2006-07 to give back a tax surplus because "it's your money," to a state in economic free fall and financial collapse in 2008-09.

As anyone who attended school in Arizona from the 1950s to the 1970s will tell you, Arizona's economy was based upon the "Five C's": Copper, Cattle, Citrus, Cotton and Climate. The reality is, Arizona's post-war economy was based upon one thing: real estate. Arizona's economy is entirely dependent upon home construction fueled by the demand of rapid population growth, doubling in size approximately every twenty years.

Ray Barnes on bipartisanship, bisexuals and the budget

Rep. Ray Barnes, R-north Phoenix, is the latest Arizona lawmaker to appear on You Tube.
Barnes' rambling rant, er, floor speech, about the state budget, bipartisanship, education cuts and the way school was back in the day acquired a louder and angrier tone as he talked.
When he got to the point of musing whether bisexual teachers would require a principal to be in charge of the girls' restroom and one for the boys' restroom, Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Phoenix, called for a point of order and he was reminded to keep his comments to the bill.
Have a listen for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UACkBQAi00 ...

We have one private school participant

by David Safier

I received an email this morning from a teacher at an Arizona independent school who is planning to ask his students if they were surveyed for the civics test Goldwater Institute used to create 3 separate studies comparing high school students attending public and private schools.

The question is, was the survey ever conducted? The best way to determine the answer is Yes is to find students who can say conclusively they got a phone call and answered the survey between November 21-23, 2008. Since about 10% of all private school high school students should have been surveyed (1350 out of about 11,000 total), it shouldn't be hard to find people who remember taking the survey.

Brewer pooh poohs the urge to "sue, sue, sue"

Gov. Jan Brewer is lamenting the litigious state of affairs in Arizona.
Why, just this month, the state has been hit with four lawsuits (five, if you count the amendments made to an earlier filing) and the Legislature OK'd an $18 million payment to settle a contract dispute it lost with Science Foundation Arizona.
"They sue, sue, sue," the governor complained during a press conference to complain about the latest lawsuit against the Legislature, this one filed by the League of Arizona Cities and Towns.
Rather than turn to the courts, Brewer said groups should try to work out their differences with ...

Any private school teachers or adminstrators reading this?

by David Safier

More on the survey results used for the G.I. civics study (No, I'm not obsessed, just very interested). Here's a way to get closer to finding out whether Strategic Vision LLC actually completed the survey for G.I. and didn't just make up the results.

It can be worth a $25 gift card for 3 lucky students.

Alex Molnar, who is also looking into this (see the post below), came up with an interesting figure. He said the survey would have polled about 1 in every 10 private high school students in the state. That would mean, finding some students who recall taking the telephone survey, if the survey was actually conducted, should be fairly easy.

Accidental Governor flip-flops on education, concedes defeat to GOP insane clown posse

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

If you needed any further evidence that the Accidental Governor is a lame duck governor who is neither respected nor feared by her own Republican dominated legislature, Monday should have erased any doubt.

Governor Jan Brewer on July 1, 2009 in her veto message of the state budget:

I received early this morning a fatally flawed legislative budget. The legislative budget ignores my consistently expressed goals and instead incorporates devastating cuts to education, public safety, and our state's most vital health services for the frail. In particular, this package of bills is shortsighted, in that it sets up an enormous revenue shortfall that will severely harm our State's future.
