SWAG Update: Early Filers for 2010

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Now that local elections are all but over for the counting in Tucson (and a possible recount in Ward 3), it's time once again to update the early filers with the Arizona Secretary of State for 2010. You can play along at home at http://www.azsos.gov/cfs/CommitteeSearch.aspx

The big news today: Terry Goddard, the state's highest-elected Democrat, filed paperwork Friday morning announcing that he is exploring a run for governor next year. Political Insider Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and former Arizona Democratic Party Chairman and 2006 U.S. Senate candidate Jim Pederson previously announced that they would not run. Former Tempe Mayor Neil Giuliano has also decided not to run

Sen. Jon Kyl's problem with female constituents

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Some of you may have seen an ad running on cable television to "call Sen. Jon Kyl and thank him..." If you are unemployed and you are desperate for your unemployment benefits to be extended by Congress, you should call Sen. Jon Kyl's office to "thank" him - he's the SOB responsible for holding up the extension of unemployment benefits in Congress. Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) Holds Up Unemployment Extension:

If your unemployment ran out this week, you can thank Sen. Jon Kyl. Yes, the Republican whip objected to a quick vote that would have helped all those people. You can contact him

It's official: Rodney Glassman is "exploring" running for John McCain's U.S. Senate seat

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

I received an e-mail today from Tucson City Councilman Rodney Glassman announcing the formation of the "Rodney Glassman U.S. Senate Exploratory Committee." "Through this committee, we intend to raise funds in order to 'test the waters' for the 2010 U.S. Senate race."

You can check out Glassman's exploratory committee web site at www.rodneyglassman.com. In case you are wondering, an exploratory committee means that Glassman does not have to resign to run under Arizona law, not that anyone is enforcing the law any longer.

It's curious timing. Could it be because the right-wing blog Gila Courier discovered his web site yesterday?

SWAG Update: Early filers for 2010

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

I have been a bit remiss lately in updating the early filers with the Arizona Secretary of State for 2010. You can play along at home at http://www.azsos.gov/cfs/CommitteeSearch.aspx.

Since the last update, former Arizona Democratic Party chairman Jim Pederson and Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon have announced that they will not be a candidate in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. Former Tempe mayor and gay rights activist Neil Giuliano is exploring running for Governor as a Democrat (he was a Republican). Republican State Treasurer Dean Martin is making noises about running for Governor, and there are persistent rumors that Republican National Committeeman John Munger is biding his time waiting to announce that he is running for Governor.

The Dempire Strikes Back - The Public Option Returns

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Over the weekend, Obama administration spokespersons including Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, and President Obama himself, appeared to signal a a retreat on the public option.

There was gnashing of teeth and loud wailing from the base of the Democratic Party. The netroots went into action immediately to remind the President that he campaigned on the public option for health care reform.

On Saturday, the Arizona Democratic Party at its Summer meeting in Flagstaff, Arizona unanimously adopted a resolution in support of the public option. Healthcare-Final (2).doc The resolution was intended for Reps. Harry Mitchell and Ann Kirkpatrick who have not yet defined their positions.

Arizona Democratic Party Statement on Failed GOP Budget

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Arizona Democratic Party has issued a statement responding to the epic failure of leadership from Governor Jan Brewer and the Republican-dominated Legislature in failing to produce a reasonable state budget before July 1 for the first time in Arizona history. Here are the highlights:

Brewer's Failed Leadership Delivers a Budget Mess
Only Stop-Gap Measures Get Through; Serious Budget Problems Still Not Solved

After nearly a full six months in office, and even though the Legislature is controlled by members of her own party, Governor Jan Brewer couldn't pull it off.  As a result of her astounding lack of leadership, Arizona now has an even bigger mess on its hands - an incomplete budget, with absolutely no vision or timeline for a resolution.
