The Accidental Governor to announce she will run for governor

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Accidental Governor will find that succession to office is so much easier than election to office.

Jan Brewer will announce today that she intends to run for governor in 2010. Apparently she believes that gross incompetence and abject failure are to be rewarded.

The Arizona Capitol Times (subscription required) reports:

Gov. Jan Brewer is expected to put an end to the questions about her candidacy this evening (Nov. 5) with an announcement that she will seek a full term as governor. Brewer is scheduled to speak at Westmarc's 17th annual Best of the West awards dinner. One source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told the Arizona Capitol Times the announcement would be made at the event.

The Accidental Governor: "mistakes were made"

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Negotiations are under way at the state capitol for a November special session to deal with the issue of state agency funding. I will have more when, or if, a special session is confirmed and there are more details.

Meanwhile, in a rare moment of candor, the Accidental Governor has acknowledged that she made mistakes as she pursued a budget deal with the Legislature, although she didn’t elaborate on exactly what they were. Arizona Capitol Times » Blog Archive » Brewer: mistakes were made (h/t Arizona Guardian for the video.)

“Obviously I did something wrong. There were mistakes made in an effort to get them to understand the problem that Arizona was facing,” Brewer told reporters on Oct.

Big education cuts coming

by David Safier

From an article in the Arizona Guardian:

State education officials say the worst is yet to come as stimulus funds are depleted and the state struggles to fill a $1.5 billion gap in the 2010 budget.

Last month, Gov. Jan Brewer asked agency directors for proposed 15 percent cuts to their budgets.

The Department of Education identified more than $11 million in cuts to five different programs, from school safety and chemical abuse prevention to family literacy programs, which among other things, helps parents obtain their GEDs.

Tom Horne, Superintendent of Public Instruction, said he picked the five programs that don’t have federal matching funds tied to them.

From the Arizona Guardian (subscription only):

Health care and child care facilities will have to pay thousands more to be licensed in Arizona under new fee schedules released Tuesday that are intended to make businesses shoulder the regulatory cost.

The largest child care centers will see their licensing fees increase 90 times over, while small behavioral health group homes will pay quadruple their current costs.

Across the board, the facilities that care for Arizona’s youngest, oldest and most infirm will over the next three months go from paying some of the lowest regulatory costs in the Western region to the highest. Advocates say that's likely to increase the supply of unregulated care and raise costs as the fee increases are passed on to families.

Audits can be valuable tools

by David Safier

It looks like the former superintendent of Tolleson Union High School District was misusing a district credit card issued to him by the district. (The story is in the subscription-only Arizona Guardian). It also looks like 41 employees were given stipends for cell phones without the supe getting consent from his school board.

How did they find out this was happening? It was revealed in a random state audit.

Do we know similar misuses of funds aren't going on in charter schools? No, because no one is even looking at the financial reports the charters submit, let alone conducting thorough audits. (It used to be that the state Auditor General looked over charter school's finances.

Consternation among conservative blogs over Desert Divas client list

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Arizona Guardian (subscription required) reports "Escort client list shakes up political community." Ruh-Roh Shaggy.

At least two prominent Republicans quit an influential GOP organization this weekend because its leader has been linked to one of the state’s biggest prostitution stings.

Charles Jensen, founder of Politics on the Rocks, was one of several thousand names on a list of clients of the Desert Divas, a high-end escort service busted last year by Phoenix police.

Although Jensen denies any involvement with the prostitution ring, Paradise Valley Mayor Vernon Parker and conservative talk-radio personality Mike Broomhead have resigned from the political group's advisory board. Parker last week announced his intentions to explore a run for governor at a meeting of the group at a Paradise Valley resort.

Goddard announces $900,000 settlement over inflated drug prices
WEDNESDAY, 23 SEPTEMBER 2009 12:25

(Phoenix, Ariz. -- Sept. 23, 2009) Attorney General Terry Goddard today announced a $900,000 settlement with Bristol-Meyers Squibb (BMS) over allegations that the pharmaceutical company set fraudulently inflated prices for certain drugs purchased by consumers, insurers and other payers.

Goddard filed a lawsuit in 2005 against 42 pharmaceutical companies, alleging that they engaged in deceptive trade practices by manipulating the Average Wholesale Price (AWP) of their prescription drugs, causing buyers to overpay.
