Sheriff Arpayaso Update

From the Department of You Just Can't Make This Shit  Up:

We don't racially profile, we just stop people who look Meskin.

When a CBS 5 News reporter asked the sheriff how his deputies determined when to question about their immigration status during a news conference Saturday he replied, "Certain criteria -- no identification, look like you just came from Mexico, and they admit it. So that's enough."

"It's absolutely not racial profiling," said director of custody Jerry Sheridan Monday.

What are these DOJ people doing in my press conference?

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is accusing U.S. Department of Justice officials of trying to sneak into a news conference by posing as reporters.

Sheriff accuses feds of sneaking into press conference

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is accusing U.S. Department of Justice officials of trying to sneak into a news conference by posing as reporters. His lawyer says he will file a complaint.
The Department of Justice admits investigators from the civil rights division attended the news conference, but says the investigators identified themselves as Justice Department officials and then left when told the press conference was closed to the public.
The dispute took place on Friday, when Arpaio held a 5 p.m. press conference at the Sheriff's Office substation on Bell Road near Dysart Road in Surprise to talk about his latest ...

It's Never Too Early...

It’s been less than 11 month since he was elected to his fifth-consecutive term in office, but Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is already soliciting more funds for another campaign.
In a letter Arpaio sent to supporters last week, the sheriff painstakingly lays out the vast left-wing conspiracy working against him - name dropping Rev. Al Sharpton, President Barack Obama, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and ACORN along with a few media outlets - and says he’s in need of financial support to fight these forces.
To reiterate the threat Sharpton poses (he’s visited Phoenix twice this year ...

Want proof? Documents back up RICO story

In the spirit of digital journalism …

Sheriff Joe Arpaio responds to Sunday’s Republic story on the use of RICO funds to lease expensive cars for he and his top staff with a post from the “Sheriff Fights Back” blog, a space on the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Web site where Arpaio regularly responds to news accounts with “The Truth Behind the Headlines.”
The post contends that information in the story on the leasing company that provides the cars, on Chief Deputy David Henderschott's first-class airfare to Honduras and on the budget is incorrect.
Documents on which the story was based — ...

While You're At It...

The Sheriff's Office took advantage of the wave of bad news surrounding a national activist group by subpoenaing records on Thursday that Joe Arpaio believes will support his notion of a vast left-wing conspiracy operating against him.
Arpaio's attorney issued a subpoena for records from the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now under the theory that local ACORN representatives were somehow involved in a lawsuit making its way through federal court alleging that Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies racially profiled Hispanic residents.
The lawsuit was filed in December 2007 and now involves a legal resident and four U.S. citizens who all ...

Can You be Governor and Sheriff at the Same Time?

We’ve been down this road before, but people are talking again about the chances of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio running for governor in 2010.
For reasons why Arpaio would make a strong candidate, supporters point to: Arpaio’s track record, his name recognition, the cash he had leftover from his last race (about $67,000) plus whatever he’s raised since.
For reasons why Arpaio would make a weak candidate, critics point to: Arpaio’s track record, his name recognition, the fact that one of his top staff members is under investigation for breaking political fundraising laws (along with fraud and money laundering), the a ...

Immigration, Arpaio trump healthcare for Arizonans

Health-care reform might be at the forefront of the national political debate, but a new Rasmussen Report survey shows Arizonans are still more concerned with immigration, and most think Sheriff Joe Arpaio is doing a good job addressing the issue.
Most of the 500 Arizona voters who participated in the telephone survey last week said immigration reform (51 percent) was more important than overhauling the health-care system (45 percent).
The poll also shows that voters here think securing the borders (65 percent) is more important than legalizing illegal immigrants in the country (20 percent).
On the Arpaio front, 57 percent of voters thought ...

Joel Fox Spills the Beans on SCA Contributors

Under threat of a $315,000 fine from the Maricopa County Elections Department, Captain Joel Fox of MCSO finally stopped stonewalling and divulged the names of contributors to the Sheriff's Command Association or SCA.  Developer, former  owner of the Phoenix Coyotes hockey team, and close pal of Sheriff Joe, Steve Ellman was one of the largest contributors.  A lot of out of state money was involved, as well as payroll deductions from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.  Some of these contributions may well be illegal.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office is denying any involvement in SCA fund raising activities despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

The New Yorker weighs in on Arpaio

He's been profiled on "60 Minutes" and the BBC, appeared on countless radio and television shows and featured in hundreds of newspapers and magazines, including a recent interview with "The National Enquirer".
But until now Joe Arpaio has never gotten the attention of "The New Yorker", that left leaning and painstakingly well-written adherent of life in the East Cost megalopolis.
The profile of Arpaio appears in this week's issue (but you've got to subscribe to read the entire piece).
Arpaio's been getting a lot of attention lately: from federal investigators, nationally known activists and media from around the country; it's even more than is typical for ...
