Sorry to burst your Beltway bubble boys

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Off-year elections are typically the subject of wild speculation and over interpretation by political observers. The conventional wisdom (CW) of the media villagers and Beltway bloviators is that the governor's races in New Jersey and Virginia are "bellwether elections" that are a "referendum" on newly elected presidents and are predictive of the outcome of mid-term elections.

Sorry to burst your Beltway bubble boys, but as Larry J. Sabato, Professor of Politics at the University of Virginia, has noted What are the national implications of the "mini mid-terms" in Virginia and NJ?

We go through this exercise every four years, just like clockwork.

Economic slide into the abyss halted, sustained recovery to take longer

Christina Romer, Chairwoman of the President's Council of Economic Advisors, writes On Today's GDP Numbers:

Data released [Thursday] by the Commerce Department show that real GDP grew at an annual rate of 3.5 percent in the third quarter of the year. This is in stark contrast to the decline of 6.4 percent annual rate just two quarters ago. Indeed, the two-quarter swing in the rate of growth of 9.9 percentage points was the largest since 1980. Analysis by both the Council of Economic Advisers and a wide range of private and public-sector forecasters indicates that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 contributed between 3 and 4 percentage points to real GDP growth in the third quarter.

Lyin' Joe's Blowin' Smoke

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

If Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) had followed my advice after the election last November, Joe Lieberman (the party of me! - CT) would have found himself stripped of any committee chairmanships and his Senate office would have been reassigned to the janitor's closet of the Hart Office Building. The janitors deserve better digs.

Of course, in the ways of the Senate today, Joe Lieberman paid no price for his holding the "50 Democrats plus Joe" Senate hostage for two years to his constant threat to caucus with the Republicans and give them control of the Senate; his bad-mouthing of Barack Obama during the presidential campaign; speaking at the Republican National Convention; and campaigning on behalf of his warmongering buddy, Sen.

GOP brand fail, civil war dividing party

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Media villagers and Beltway bloviators inform us of their conventional wisdom (CW) that Republicans will enjoy a mid-term election resurgence in 2010. First of all, when was the last time that CW was correct? Anyone? That's what I thought.

Secondly, the Beltway media elites have always shilled for the GOP, win or lose. These over-paid media elites have a vested financial interest in maintaining their Republican allies in Congress who protect the multi-billion dollar media conglomerate monopolies that pay their salaries. Ben Bagdikian - New Media Monopoly

No, the real political story of our time is not a GOP resurgence, but the GOP brand fail and the political civil war within the conservative movement.

It's Never Too Early...

It’s been less than 11 month since he was elected to his fifth-consecutive term in office, but Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is already soliciting more funds for another campaign.
In a letter Arpaio sent to supporters last week, the sheriff painstakingly lays out the vast left-wing conspiracy working against him - name dropping Rev. Al Sharpton, President Barack Obama, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and ACORN along with a few media outlets - and says he’s in need of financial support to fight these forces.
To reiterate the threat Sharpton poses (he’s visited Phoenix twice this year ...

Crazy Franks loses it, Calls Obama an Enemy of Humanity

Out-of-touch Arizona Rep. Trent Franks (R-Gerrymanderville) has surfaced in a YouTube video in which he refers to President Barack Obama as an enemy of Humanity. This is coming from the guy who voted against SCHIP by the way. Apparently Crazy Franks is one of those people who stop supporting life at birth because it saves him a buck of two. Talk about an enemy of humanity!

This man will stop at nothing to gain the attention of those on the very far right side of the political spectrum. He even recently even held a press conference (along with Rep. John Shadegg) to highlight his blatant racism.

Reps. Trent Franks an John Shadegg engage in McCarthyism, religious bigotry againt Muslim-Americans

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The right-wing has exhibited a disturbing trend towards a new era of McCarthyism in recent years. But their latest craziness is religious bigotry and fear mongering against Muslim American citizens.

In the mind of right-wing conspiracy theory loving religious bigots, Muslim Americans are all spies for Islamo-fascism (a term fabricated by the right-wing and of no actual significance) and Islamic sleeper-cell terrorists who are conspiring to "Islamize" a "Christian" America. Seriously. I kid you not.

A quartet of Republican Congressmen, including Arizona's own Reps. Trent Franks and John Shadegg, convened a press conference this week to demand that the House Sergeant at Arms investigate the organization Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), because this advocacy organization does what every other advocacy organization does, but they do it while being Muslim.

Protest Planned Against NJ School's Obama Song

Conservative groups plan to rally Monday near a New Jersey school where students performed a song celebrating President Barack Obama.

The planned rally has school district officials planning to beef up security at the B. Bernice Young School in Burlington Township, which houses kindergartners through second-graders.

Right. Tell the kids who were singing that song how wrong they were to sing it. Shame them. Create an atmosphere of fear around the school.

I don't have the figures, so I'll put this as a series of questions. How many schools are there in the U.

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL): a fearless unapologetic Democrat

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) is a freshman congressman representing Florida's eighth congressional district. He caused a sensation in late September with this speech about "the Republican Health Plan: (1) Don't get sick; (2) and if you do get sick... (3) DIE QUICKLY."

Republicans howled that Grayson called them out for their obstruction of health care reform and demanded an apology. Unlike his conservative Democratic colleagues who are easily intimidated and too readily appease Republicans, Grayson did not "validate" Republicans' feelings or apologize for speaking out of turn. Rather, he said "I apologize to the dead and their families," holding up this
