SWAG Update: Early Filers for 2010

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Now that local elections are all but over for the counting in Tucson (and a possible recount in Ward 3), it's time once again to update the early filers with the Arizona Secretary of State for 2010. You can play along at home at http://www.azsos.gov/cfs/CommitteeSearch.aspx

The big news today: Terry Goddard, the state's highest-elected Democrat, filed paperwork Friday morning announcing that he is exploring a run for governor next year. Political Insider Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and former Arizona Democratic Party Chairman and 2006 U.S. Senate candidate Jim Pederson previously announced that they would not run. Former Tempe Mayor Neil Giuliano has also decided not to run

SWAG Update: Early filers for 2010

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

I have been a bit remiss lately in updating the early filers with the Arizona Secretary of State for 2010. You can play along at home at http://www.azsos.gov/cfs/CommitteeSearch.aspx.

Since the last update, former Arizona Democratic Party chairman Jim Pederson and Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon have announced that they will not be a candidate in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. Former Tempe mayor and gay rights activist Neil Giuliano is exploring running for Governor as a Democrat (he was a Republican). Republican State Treasurer Dean Martin is making noises about running for Governor, and there are persistent rumors that Republican National Committeeman John Munger is biding his time waiting to announce that he is running for Governor.

Farley Report, June 9, 2009

Update from Rep. Farley on the state budget:
Howdy,  Friends O'Farley...

Well, we passed a budget last Thursday night. It was the Republican leadership's budget, with many unwise components we lambasted for hours during floor debate.

I compared it to that children's book by Judith Viorst that my daughters used to love -- The Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Budget.

But the Speaker is not handing the budget over to the Governor for her promised veto -- he is keeping it in his back pocket for possible use later, maybe even on June 30, if negotiations don't go to his liking.

Which does have one advantage: The longer the budget's elements are out there in the public, the more problems crop up.

House passes budget, afraid to transmit it to the Governor for her veto

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The main budget bill passed the House on a 32-24 vote, one vote more than needed. Legislature OKs budget but will talk with Brewer No Democrats voted for this turkey of a GOP budget. Three Republicans broke with party ranks and voted against the spending plans: Representatives Bill Konopnicki of Safford, Doug Quelland of Phoenix and Vic Williams of Tucson. (Being under pressure from LD 26 Democrats must have had an effect on him).

The GOP clown possee leadership managed to pass its budget, but it is holding off transmitting the budget to the Governor.

"The budget is viewed by many Capitol observers as a 'practice budget' since a Brewer veto was widely expected.

SWAG Re: Early Filers for 2010

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

There has been a number of early candidate filings this year for 2010. Many of the ranked contenders, however, may not file until as late as January of 2010 because of Arizona's resign to run law. So the early filers are not necessarily indicative of who's in and who's out for 2010. Some of the early filers have not even designated what office they are seeking.

A word of caution, the list below does not distinguish between an "exploratory committee" and a "candidate committee." "NP" indicates no party affilliation designated on the face of the filing.

So who is out there exploring if not actually running for office in 2010, with a little more than a year to go before the petition filing deadline?

Governor

Janelle Wood - NP
Roy Miller - NP
Kent Warren Couchee - NP
John Paul Mitchell - Independent
Hugh Kealer - Republican
Karen Johnson - Republican

Secretary of State

Sam Wercinski - Democrat (office sought is not designated in his filing)
Steve Gallardo - Democrat (his filing designates District 13 Senate)*

Superintendent of Public Instruction

Jason Williams - Democrat
Penny Kotterman - Democrat
John Huppenthal - Republican

A little birdie told us....

Taking a page from Barack Obama, John McCain and other pols who have used social media to broadcast their intentions, state Rep. Bill Konopnicki, R-Cyberspace, tells us via Twitter that he is thinking of giving U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick a run for her congressional seat next year.
Konopnicki toyed with the idea of a congressional run last year, when the seat held by Rick Renzi was up for grabs. Ultimately, he decided against it, citing the amount of money needed to run in the sprawling first congressional district and the apparent short supply of support from the GOP.
Kirkpatrick, a Democrat, went ...

Lawmaker: Tricks won't do the trick

The draft budget released by GOP leaders earlier this week has received a tepid reception from Republican ranks.
Although few lawmakers are talking on the record, the hallway buzz is that no more than 15 Republicans agree with the concepts in the draft plan. (31 votes are needed to pass a budget.)
That estimate struck Rep. Bill Konopnicki, R-Safford, as high. He's one of the few reps who is talking about the budget process, and he said he'd be surprised if there were 11 members in agreement with the plan. The problem, he said, is the magnitude of the cuts ($670 million, ...

Rep. Bill Konopnicki: "I'm Sick of Russell Pearce" aka "Cut Man"

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

It's rare that I ever reference something from the wingnut blog Sonoran Alliance but they had a whiny post by Chewie Shofir that is worth a mention. The wingnuts are upset that all around nice guy Rep. Bill Konopnicki "was very unprofessional" and "used extremely rude language" towards Sen. Russell Pearce aka "Cut Man," one of the biggest assholes I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. Chewie on that Shofir.

From the Legislative Report -

Konopnicki said one reason for the meetings is “because the hard-right Republicans are not helping us” solve the deficit…They want to do one thing: They want to go in with a meat cleaver and chop everything,” he said.
