OK, But This Time We're Not Kidding

The Arizona Democratic Party will hold a State Committee Meeting to elect yet another State Chair at the Wyndham Phoenix tomorrow.  The Wyndham is located at 50 E. Adams in Phoenix.  Registration begins at 8am and the meeting will start at 10am.  Only those on the Democratic State Committee can vote, but others are encouraged to come and watch democracy in action.

At this point, the only announced candidate is previous State Chair Don Bivens.  It had previously been speculated that Bob Lord might throw his hat in the ring, but Lord has decided not to do so.

Bivens was defeated in a previous election by Paul Eckerstrom of Tucson, but Eckerstrom resigned after only two short weeks after concluding he could not handle the duties of State Chair from Tucson.

Lord Not Running

Bob Lord has announced that he is not running for chair. He has asked me to post this letter from him:

Fellow Democrats,

I’ve struggled with the decision regarding my candidacy for State Party Chair for far too long. The urging from so many people I admire from all across our Party – activists, benefactors, elected officials, and Party leaders – has made this an especially difficult decision. Being seen by many of my friends as the best choice to unify our Party at this crucial time is quite an honor. It has caused me to analyze, re-analyze and, yes, over-analyze whether to answer your call.

Murmurs, and I Don’t Mean Leisha Hailey

The talk is that Bob Lord is making some moves to make himself eligible to run for state chairman. I’ve heard more than one person mention Jeff Latas’s name. I wonder how much of a case Latas can make against Don Bivens, given that he nominated the guy only two weeks ago.

It’s okay, these guys have plenty of time to make their decision on whether or not to run. They really don’t need to make up their minds until they get in the car to go to the meeting.

The one that got away

In a year that saw many of his Republican colleagues go down to defeat, U.S. Rep. John Shadegg (R-Phoenix) not only survived - he beat his challenger by 12 points.

"I think this was a very, very decisive victory," Shadegg told PolitickerAZ.com. "I credit my win to, number one, the people of Arizona and particularly those in the Third District, who know who John Shadegg is."

Shadegg: 'I'm still alive!'

U.S. Rep. John Shadegg (R-Phoenix) took time at a rally for John McCain in Phoenix on Saturday to reassure the crowd he will win his re-election bid against Democratic opponent Bob Lord.

"You've seen me pummeled on the air," said Shadegg before the crowd of around 200 in Desert Storm Park. He told them he's been hit by the Lord campaign on television, radio and in mail pieces.
