H/t to masaccio at firedoglake.com for this post UnitedHealth Group Gets Millions from Federal Subsidy, Spends Millions Against Public Option

UnitedHealth Group (symbol UNH) has paid its shareholders $1.5bn so far this year, through its stock repurchase program, and an additional $55mn from its paltry dividend of $.03 per share. That compares nicely with its reported earnings of over $1.8bn in the first six months. Shareholders’ equity is at $21.5bn, so there is a return on equity of 7.2% in the first half.

UNH has four business segments: healthcare services, Optum, Ingenix, and prescription services. Ingenix has the distinction of owning the Lewin Group, described by the

Bobby Jo versus the volcano

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Remember how, during his big prime-time speech last month, Lousiana's Republican governor Bobby Jindal, in addition to making stuff up about what he did during Hurricane Katrina, also found time to mock the Obama administration for "wasteful spending" in the stimulus bill, including

… $140 million for something called “volcano monitoring.” Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington, D.C.

(h/t Zachary Roth at TPMMuckraker | Jindal's Mockery Of Volcano Monitoring Money Only Looking Dumber After Redoubt Blows)

Why is Jindal's line looking even worse now? Because, as you've likely heard, Alaska's Mount Redoubt, 100 miles southwest of Anchorage,

Red State Socialism

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

One of my favorite economics bloggers, Jon Perr over at Crooks and Liars blog, posted this provocative report:

In just their latest posturing for the 2012 Republican presidential race, governors Sarah Palin (R-AK) and Mark Sanford (R-SC) joined Texas' Rick Perry, Mississippi's Haley Barbour and Louisiana's Bobby Jindal in announcing they would reject some of the federal stimulus funds allocated to their states. But as the steady one-way flow of tax dollars and earmarks spreading the wealth from Washington to their states shows, de facto red state socialism is alive and well.

As a 2007 analysis (above) of federal spending per tax dollar received by state shows, the reddest states generally reaped the most green.

Bobby Jindal? Ay, Pobrecito.

The take on Bobby Jindal on these here intertubes this morning was that he came off like Kenneth the Page during his presidential response last night. Ouch. What’s worse is the speed at which this particular meme has travelled. Take for example the Facebook group dedicated to petitioning Saturday Night Live to have Jack McBrayer (the guy who plays Kenneth on 30 Rock) play Jindal on their show. The group already has over 200 members and, if the time stamps on the wall posts are to be believed, was formed only moments after Jindal finished his speech.

(It is funny to me that words like “dweeb” and “dork” are being thrown around when the speech was in response to a guy with a self-confessed love of Conan the Barbarian and Spiderman.

Poisoned Waters?

Despite earlier denials, Bobby Jindal is now being talked about as a possible presidential candidate in 2012. They are even calling him the “Republican Obama.” I’m wondering though if the sort of campaign waged against Barack Obama will make it hard for Jindal to sell himself to the Republican base.

I’m thinking of two lines of attack on Obama: one was that Obama was some sort of effete Ivy Leaguer, a pointy headed intellectual out of touch with Joe Six-Pack. Well, guess what? Jindal is a graduate of Brown and a Rhodes Scholar who has written articles for scholarly journals.

More important though was the not-quite-official campaign questioning whether or not Obama was a “true American.
