Conservative activist judge: IOKIYAR

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Apparently there is a special exemption in Arizona law for reckless speeding in excess of the posted speed limit that I was totally unaware of: "it's OK if you're a Republican" IOKIYAR Who knew?

This may lead to a new black market in fake voter ID cards. "See officer, I'm a Republican." "Well, OK then, sorry to have bothered you, you can go on your way."

On April 10, photo-enforcement cameras on Loop 101 caught Arizona GOP Executive Director Brett Mecum driving 109 mph in a 65 mph zone. Mecum's defense team argued, in part, that his prosecution for criminal speeding and reckless driving was selective and politically motivated -- why, because he is a Republican?

Dude, you were going a 109 mph, which is reckless endangerment of everyone else on the highway around you.

Judge Keegan: Mecum's arrest "neither appropriate nor proportional"

Judge John Keegan says the state Department of Public Safety should not have arrested Arizona GOP Executive Director Brett Mecum from his office at party headquarters last month.
Mecum was targeted by authorities after photo-enforcement cameras on Loop 101 caught him driving 109 mph on April 10. Mecum's defense team argued, in part, that his prosecution was selective and politically motivated. The arrest was a partisan hit to embarass a political operative, in other words.
DPS is led by Director Roger Vanderpool, an appointee of Democrat and former Gov. Janet Napolitano.
Keegan, a justice of the peace at the Arrowhead Court in Surprise, dismissed the ...

GOP Director Arrested on 'Traffic Violation' Charge

The executive director of the Arizona Republican Party was arrested Wednesday morning on a "traffic violation" charge, the GOP has confirmed.
Brett Mecum was arrested by the Department of Public Safety between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. at party headquarters, Republican spokesman Matthew Roberts said. Roberts said the GOP was still working to discover what charge Mecum had been arrested on.
A DPS spokesman would not confirm a rumor that Mecum had been charged with criminal speeding, saying he was still looking into the case. The fact that Mecum was arrested at headquarters and not wihle driving has led some to speculate ...

Even the Liberal New Republic…

The New Republic has posted an article with a quick take on the 2010 US Senate race here. On the Democratic side, they mention that Janet Napolitano would have been a strong candidate but for her jumping to Homeland Security. They don’t mention any other possibility. They quote Jorge Luis Garcia as saying that he hasn’t heard about anyone else, which might indicate that the “Draft John Adams” folks need to get the word out a bit better about their guy.

On the Republican side, they name Jack Harper (Jack Harper!) as a conservative dissatisfied with John McCain that could run. Harper lacks the stature to make a serious challenge from the right, but they fail to mention others that do, like
