It's all the Democrats Fault? Really Governor Brewer?

The Republican party controls both branches of the Arizona state legislature and the governorship.  They've never invited Democratic leadership to participate in budget talks.

So who's to blame for the horrible budget passed by the legislature which the accidental governor is now considering signing?  Why, it's all the Democrats fault!

Sen. Sen. Jackass Harper (R-Surprise!) has even likened the behavior of legislative Democrats to the regime of Saddam Hussein.

Now it's rumored that Governor Brewer is going to sign a budget that she previously said would result in decimating cuts to education, health care and public safety. It's a budget that isn't even balanced  as required by the Arizona Constitution.

Special Session Update: The "Sham-Wow!" Budget Deal

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Monday marks the start of the sixth week of the Special Session and is also the next to last day before the "drop dead" date on which the Legislature can refer any matters to the general election ballot on November 3. Secretary of State Ken Bennett has said that the tax referral must be approved by 8 a.m. Tuesday if he and county elections officials across the state are to have enough time to prepare for a Nov. 3 special election. These clowns just keep making it up as they go along without any regard for rules and procedures.

State Budget Forum

The Arizona Senate has canceled budget hearings for this Thursday since they can't even round up enough Republican votes to support the harsh cuts advocated by KookyKon leadership.

But as Random Musings. points out, Republicans in the legislature must consider Scottsdale home turf, since they have chosen to hold hearings there for two consecutive weeks in a row. Considering that Scottsdale Republican legislators Carolyn Allen and Michelle Reagan don't support Republican leadership's cretinous cuts, you'd think they'd want to spread out a little more (perhaps Mesa or Sun City where the hardcore KonservaKooks live...).

So show up and let the governor and East Valley mayors know that you don't supporting gutting education and health care in Arizona so that big corporations can get property tax cuts.

Carolyn Allen sounds like she gets it

by David Safier I don't know much about State Sen. Carolyn Allen, except that she's a Scottsdale Republican from the same district as John Kavanagh. With that in mind, you should read her very human op ed about our need...

Saradnik lets go on S. Arizona Republican legislators

by David Safier

Lena Saradnik, who was the LD-26 Rep until she had to step aside for health reasons, is always outspoken, but she really lets fly in an Explorer guest column, Tucson-area Republicans failing test. Her subject isn't education cuts. It's the $22.5 million cut to Science Foundation Arizona, which could cost Arizona $85 million in matching funds.

She blames three R's from this area -- Antenori, Gowan and Stevens -- for pushing the cuts. But she doesn't stop there.

Williams, she wrote, could have opposed the cuts in the House Appropriations Committee.

And as for Senators Melvin and Paton:

The 2009 budget bill (with the $22.5 cut to SFAz and education) passed in special session with only the minimum 16 Senate votes required for passage.

Bennett responds to Democrats' charges

Since former State Senate President Ken Bennett again brought up the possibility that he would run against Sydney Hay for the Republican nomination in CD1, the Democrats have been rolling out the unwelcome wagon by reviving past issues they'll try to make current issues should, Bennett decide to enter the contest.

Senate moves to repeal property tax

In a 16-13 decision that saw two Republicans defect to the "nay" side and one Democrat say "yea," the Senate voted in favor of permanently eliminating the statewide property tax.

A moratorium was placed on the tax in 2006, but that freeze is set to expire in January of 2009. Today's vote, along with the House's vote in March, means that if Gov. Janet Napolitano decides to sign the bill into law, the tax - estimated at $250 million annually - will be gone forever.

Capitol honors its own

PHOENIX - A few short days after L.A. had the Oscars, Phoenix hosted its own round of self-congratulatory accolades at the Arizona Capitol Times's Best of the Capitol 2008 Awards. No Joan Rivers, no Elton John after-party, no orchestra to play off the recipients, who largely didn't favor the mingling crowd with speeches - but there was an element of glamor, in the person of Rep.
