Most people know that 2008 is quite a busy year in Arizona congressional politics, but today the Arizona Capitol Times shed light on just how busy it is. The state boasts four competitive House races - half of its districts - the outcomes of which will help shape Congress for the next two years, but the less-scrutinized races have a wealth of candidates as well.

In parts 1-3, four of the five candidates discussed the Iraq War, diplomacy toward "rogue states," veterans care, tax breaks for oil companies and global climate change (the fifth candidate, David Schweikert, chose not to participate).

Bitter Smith comes in with a show of strength

Bitter Smith had appeared before the crowd at the LD8 Republican meeting to inform everyone that, though she was not able to participate in that evening's CD5 Republican candidate forum, it would be the last time she would be barred from doing so.

Mitchell sees tough road to re-election

Rep. Harry Mitchell (D-5) made an honest judgment to the Green Valley News about the intensity of the re-election bid he faces this year.

"I will have to say that it's going to be very difficult. I know it’s going to be hard, it’s going to take a lot of work,” he told GVN in an interview. He's still optimistic about his chances, though. "But I'm going to win," he added.

A good day for Mitchell

Today U.S. Rep. Harry Mitchell (D-5) declared victory in his fight for transparency on the issue of suicide rates among veterans, as Secretary of Veterans Affairs James Peake declared he would meet Mitchell's May 9 deadline to hand over relevant documents.

"I will close the loop with you before Friday and give you what I think you are asking for," said Peake at a hearing of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs.

Ogsbury defends his conservative credentials

Jim Ogsbury, lawyer, lobbyist and former congressional staffer, makes no bones about the fact that fiscal conservatism is the cornerstone of his campaign.

"That speaks directly to why I'm running," he said when asked whether the Democratic Congress was solely responsible for the ballooning federal budget, and, commensurately, the national debt. "It spans both parties - there's enough blame to go around."
