Good teachers will do damn near anything for their students

by David Safier

Here's another comment from the teacher in Tempe whose comment I moved to the front a few days ago. He spotlights one of the ironies good teachers understand. They complain, rightly, about budget cuts and unnecessary restrictions. But when the students walk in the classroom, all that goes out the window and they bust their asses to give their students the best education they're capable of.

If your answer is, "Good, we can make cuts with little harm," you're not considering the burn out rate that causes good teachers to leave the profession or the loss of those little individual attentions that don't show up on test scores but can make a huge difference in a young person's life.

Grijalva cosponsors Graduation for All Act

by David Safier

Here's a press release from Grijalva's office:

Grijalva Announces Bill To Help Struggling Schools Prevent Dropouts, Encourage Pursuit of Higher Education

Washington, DC – Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva today announced the release of H.R. 4122, the Graduation for All Act, which seeks to decrease dropout rates and provide assistance to struggling middle schools and high schools around the country.

The bill, co-sponsored by Grijalva, House Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller and several other lawmakers, authorizes $2 billion in competitive grants for low-performing high schools and their feeder middle schools, increases financial aid awareness and career planning, and supports strategic partnerships between high schools, middle schools and local communities to turn around struggling institutions, among other features.

And speaking of best buds (which I did below) . . .

by David Safier

Here's a photo of Vic Williams (R-LD26) hanging around with a few of his closest friends: Russell Pearce, J.D. Hayworth and Sheriff Joe Arpaio (Present but out of the shot, Andrew Thomas). That's Vic looking stern and resolute behind the big three.

The issue is immigration. With those folks sharing the microphone, you know the tone is harsh.

How harsh? The Republic, not known as a Republican-bashing publication or a bastion of liberalism, had this to say under the headline, "Pearce and crew fill leadership vacuum with bunk."

Because Congress has abdicated its responsibility to resolve illegal immigration, powers have stepped into their leadership vacuum.

Grijalva blasts Baucus bill, restates commitment to public option

by David Safier

Here's a statement Grijalva released today about the Baucus health care reform bill.

“Today, the Senate Finance Health Care Reform bill was released by Senator Max Baucus.

“It is telling that Senator Baucus stood alone at today’s press conference. There was no “Gang of Six,” including the absence of Senator Snowe and no Democrats. Even with huge concessions to the legislation, including no public option, it not so shockingly, has not garnered any visible support.

“Now that we've seen that Senate Republicans are not going to support any bill, no matter how weak, it is time to start earnest negotiations among Democrats for what is best for America, not what is best for people’s personal politics.

You want indoctrination? We got indoctrination.

by David Safier
Here's an excerpt from Reagan's speech to school children in 1988. Ask yourself, how many eardrums would be shattered by the outraged screaming if Obama praised the Democratic agenda the way Reagan praised the Republican agenda?

A genuine question about Medicare

by David Safier
Here's something I honestly don't know the answer to. People say Medicare is heading into massive debt, and I believe that's true over the long haul. But my question is: does that means it's spending too much, or it's underfunded?

Here's how I want to pose the question.

Let's say we take the actual money expended on Medicare in 2008, including money spent on health care, administration, etc. -- every penny -- and divide it by the number of people served by Medicare that year. That would give us the cost per person.

Then let's try and figure out how much a health insurance company would charge to insure that same person.

Howard Fischer ed article leans right, Star's version leans even righter

by David Safier
Here's the story. The U.S. Census Bureau says Arizona doesn't spend as much on education as other states. No news there. The only new bit of data is that, relative to our state's personal income, we climb up from 47th in education funding to 34th. In other words, we're a low income, low education state. And if we want to guarantee our status as a low income state, we should just continue underfunding education.

Howard Fischer goes to some experts to analyze the data. Here they are, in order of appearance: Tom Horne, Ed Supe; Matthew Ladner, Goldwater Institute; Justin Olson, Arizona Tax Research Association (In case you don't know the

The FASTER Times

by David Safier
Here's a news site I just bookmarked and plan to keep my eye on: The Faster Times. It looks like a serious attempt at creating something that resembles a print newspaper, but totally online. My best guess is that it aims to fill a spot somewhere between HuffPo and a daily print newspaper.

Faster Times has over 20 people listed as staff, all with journalistic experience and some with serious credentials. They're almost all on the young side. It claims to have correspondents all over the world, which I take to mean, people who live in various countries who will report on events as they unfold.

Health care debate all over the board

by David Safier
Here's a quote every Democrat playing duck-and-delay games with health care legislation should carry keep in mind.

Republican Senator Jim DeMint said if they can delay health care legislation until September, they can kill it.

"If we’re able to stop Obama on this it will be his Waterloo. It will break him," he said.

This is probably an overstatement, but the Obama presidency will be seriously damaged if one of his signature issues goes down in flames.

During the Clinton administration, Gingrich feared a Democratic health care bill. He saw that as a way for Democrats to cement their majority, so he knew he had to pull out all the stops to defeat it.
