The Accidental Governor to announce she will run for governor

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Accidental Governor will find that succession to office is so much easier than election to office.

Jan Brewer will announce today that she intends to run for governor in 2010. Apparently she believes that gross incompetence and abject failure are to be rewarded.

The Arizona Capitol Times (subscription required) reports:

Gov. Jan Brewer is expected to put an end to the questions about her candidacy this evening (Nov. 5) with an announcement that she will seek a full term as governor. Brewer is scheduled to speak at Westmarc's 17th annual Best of the West awards dinner. One source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told the Arizona Capitol Times the announcement would be made at the event.

Verschoor explores for state treasurer

State Sen. Thayer Verschoor  is the latest lawmaker to set sail upon the choppy political seas with an exploratory committee. The probable destination: The state treasurer's seat in 2010.
Verschoor, a Gilbert Republican, is one of 10 senators hitting their eight-year term limit, and thus looking at other job prospects.
The senator said he won't seek the treasurer job if the current occupant, Dean Martin, seeks a second term. Verschoor said he would have other options if that were the case, although he didn't elaborate. However, Martin is widely expected to get into the governor's race.
Andrei Cherny, a former assistant attorney ...

Cracking the Code

The GOP cocktail hour known as "Politics on the Rocks" is having a fundraiser for Arizona Right to Life this evening.  As you may have heard, the founder of this group,Charles Jensen, was recently embarrassed to find his name on the list of clients for a major prostitution ring called Desert Divas.  Jensen denies that he ever used the services of Desert Divas, but some say his alibi is more full of holes than swiss cheese.  Meanwhile, State Treasurer Dean Martin has canceled his scheduled appearance at a "Politics on the Rocks" event and prominent members of the board of directors for the group

Consternation among conservative blogs over Desert Divas client list

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Arizona Guardian (subscription required) reports "Escort client list shakes up political community." Ruh-Roh Shaggy.

At least two prominent Republicans quit an influential GOP organization this weekend because its leader has been linked to one of the state’s biggest prostitution stings.

Charles Jensen, founder of Politics on the Rocks, was one of several thousand names on a list of clients of the Desert Divas, a high-end escort service busted last year by Phoenix police.

Although Jensen denies any involvement with the prostitution ring, Paradise Valley Mayor Vernon Parker and conservative talk-radio personality Mike Broomhead have resigned from the political group's advisory board. Parker last week announced his intentions to explore a run for governor at a meeting of the group at a Paradise Valley resort.

Special Session Update: Week Eight - Time to Decide (or Not)

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Arizona House and Senate reconvene at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, beginning the eighth week of the Special Session. The Arizona Capitol Times reports that there has been no progress since 5-way talks began last Friday.

The Accidental Governor has until the end of Wednesday to either sign or veto the budget package sent to her last week -- unless the Legislature adjourns sine die today or tomorrow; this would extend the time the Accidental Governor has to act on bills sitting on her desk for another ten days. If there are genuine bipartisan negotiations underway, this may be what occurs today.

SWAG Update: Early filers for 2010

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

I have been a bit remiss lately in updating the early filers with the Arizona Secretary of State for 2010. You can play along at home at http://www.azsos.gov/cfs/CommitteeSearch.aspx.

Since the last update, former Arizona Democratic Party chairman Jim Pederson and Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon have announced that they will not be a candidate in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. Former Tempe mayor and gay rights activist Neil Giuliano is exploring running for Governor as a Democrat (he was a Republican). Republican State Treasurer Dean Martin is making noises about running for Governor, and there are persistent rumors that Republican National Committeeman John Munger is biding his time waiting to announce that he is running for Governor.

The House Appropriations Committee approved the conformed version of the state equalization property tax repeal bill on Tuesday. Arizona lawmakers miss deadline for property-tax repeal According to several news sources, Senate President Bob Burns says he cannot find support for the Accidental Governor's temporary sales tax increase, and he will transmit the Senate budget package, sans sales tax referral, to the House for final action. Sen. Burns did not specify when but it may be as early as today when the House and Senate reconvene this afternoon.

This budget is almost identical to the July 1 budget that the Accidental Governor vetoed as "fatally flawed.

Stimulus, borrowing and shenanigans

by David Safier
If you read Howard Fischer's article in this morning's Star about Arizona having to borrow $131 million because the feds are holding back stim money, you were probably as confused as I was. It was a "He said, She said, She won't talk" story.

He, Dean Martin, said the fed is stiffing Arizona to get back at Kyl, which will force us to borrow money for schools and pay interest on it we can ill afford.

She, Sandra Abrevaya, spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Education, said there were concerns Arizona planned to use the money for expenses other than education, which it's not supposed to do.
