Democrats target Brewer with Socratic method

As Gov. Jan Brewer prepares to announce her election bid today, Democrats have unveiled a new weapon in their campaign against her: the rhetorical question.
Not since Socrates and Plato were talking politics in Athens have we seen as many question marks as turned up in a press release last night from Jennifer Johnson, who attributed the following remarks to party chairman Don Bivens:
How can she convince voters she is actually qualified to lead? By blaming the Republican leadership she battled all year? Or by blaming the Democrats she ignored all year?  Her resume is filled with job losses, ...

Can't we all just get along? Guess not.

by David Safier
Let me try to sort this out. Dem legislators don't like the R budget. Guv doesn't like the R budget. R legislators don't like Guv's sales tax increase, and they won't even dignify the Dem budget with a comment. Dem legislators don't like Guv's sales tax increase, because it's the wrong tax increase.

Have I left anyone out?

Who's on first?

The latest scuffle is around Brewer's 5 hour budget hearing, where she asked for "public input." R legislators say she stacked the deck, only inviting people who want to raise the sales tax. "A trough-feeding event," Burns called it. (Good phrase, Bob.

"Stronger ADP" looking stronger still

by David Safier

A group of Young Dems formed a group, A Stronger ADP (Arizona Democratic Party), in the weeks before the recent State Democratic Meeting where Don Bivens was elected Chair, after Paul Eckerstrom had been elected, then resigned . . . If you don't know the whole tangled tale, you can catch up on it elsewhere.

Anyway, Stronger ADP, whose members decided to cloak themselves in anonymity, created a detailed, thoughtful document about changes they hoped to see in the state party. Then, days before the meeting, they revealed their identities.

They attended the meeting filled with trepidation. To their surprise, they were greeted with support from rank and file Dems, elected officials and party officials.

Meet the New Chair, Same as the Old Chair

As you all probably know by now, Don Bivens was once again elected State Chair of the Arizona Democratic Party at the State Committee Meeting held on Saturday at the Wyndham Phoenix.  Bivens said that his previous defeat by Paul Eckerstrom of Pima County was "a graduate course in humility" and vowed more transparency and responsiveness to grassroots activists.  We'll be watching to see if he keeps his promise.

Bivens captured over 80% of the vote Saturday with the final vote:

Don Bivens, Maricopa County - 482
Ted Downing, Pima County - 96
Michael Mandeville, Yavapai County - 7.

Word has it that Bivens folks did a admirable job of lining up the roughly 300 proxy votes before the meeting so the result was pretty much baked into the cake.

OK, But This Time We're Not Kidding

The Arizona Democratic Party will hold a State Committee Meeting to elect yet another State Chair at the Wyndham Phoenix tomorrow.  The Wyndham is located at 50 E. Adams in Phoenix.  Registration begins at 8am and the meeting will start at 10am.  Only those on the Democratic State Committee can vote, but others are encouraged to come and watch democracy in action.

At this point, the only announced candidate is previous State Chair Don Bivens.  It had previously been speculated that Bob Lord might throw his hat in the ring, but Lord has decided not to do so.

Bivens was defeated in a previous election by Paul Eckerstrom of Tucson, but Eckerstrom resigned after only two short weeks after concluding he could not handle the duties of State Chair from Tucson.

When You Are In a Deep Hole, Keep Hiring Consultants

I recieved a couple of e-mails this weekend from people preturbed that the state party is hiring a head hunter to search for the next executive director. I share a great deal of the concerns of the people that wrote me, but I did a little poking around and found out a little about what motivated the decision.

First off, the “rollout” of this doesn’t seem to be handled well. Given what has gone on over the last couple of weeks, and the complaints of lack of communication and inclusion for the last few years, it is understandable that many party officers would feel like this decision was yet another one sprung on them.

Say It Ain’t So, Raúl

Argh. No Comment.

Dear State Committeeperson,

Throughout my career, as a School Board Member, a County Supervisor, and as a Congressman I have come to appreciate what a difference an effective State Party Chair can make to our election outcomes. Even more importantly, as an activist who is in politics to fight for people, to fight for fairness and justice, and to make the differences with the other party as clear as I know how, I have come to value leaders who bring passion and commitment to our politics. These are the reasons I am supporting Don Bivens as our Democratic State Party Chair.

Bivens Officially Announces

After the jump is a letter from Don Bivens to members of the State Democratic Committee

To: All State Committee Members

From: Don Bivens

Friends,

I am running for State Party Chair in the election to be held on March 7, and I ask for your vote and your support. It is time to unite our party and to take the fight to the Republicans!

I heard the message loud and clear on January 24, and I get it. In the ‘08 election cycle we attracted record numbers of volunteers, grew our ranks, and raised substantial funds, only to see losses– painful losses– in Legislative races on which we all worked so hard.

Murmurs, and I Don’t Mean Leisha Hailey

The talk is that Bob Lord is making some moves to make himself eligible to run for state chairman. I’ve heard more than one person mention Jeff Latas’s name. I wonder how much of a case Latas can make against Don Bivens, given that he nominated the guy only two weeks ago.

It’s okay, these guys have plenty of time to make their decision on whether or not to run. They really don’t need to make up their minds until they get in the car to go to the meeting.
