Maricopa Community College District Board goes rogue

by David Safier

This is about Maricopa and it's about community colleges -- a bit out of my usual physical and educational geography -- but really, it's about a rogue members of a Board trying to use the colleges for personal and political ends, educational mission be damned. And that kind of abuse of education is always in my blogging neighborhood.

A 55 page report (h/t to Dawn Teo for bring it to my attention) that came out recently raked the board over the coals. Among the charges, taken verbatim from the report:

  • Attempting to control and censor student newspaper content.
  • Asserting the right to control content in courses based on appropriateness according to the standards of individual board members.

Crazy Franks loses it, Calls Obama an Enemy of Humanity

Out-of-touch Arizona Rep. Trent Franks (R-Gerrymanderville) has surfaced in a YouTube video in which he refers to President Barack Obama as an enemy of Humanity. This is coming from the guy who voted against SCHIP by the way. Apparently Crazy Franks is one of those people who stop supporting life at birth because it saves him a buck of two. Talk about an enemy of humanity!

This man will stop at nothing to gain the attention of those on the very far right side of the political spectrum. He even recently even held a press conference (along with Rep. John Shadegg) to highlight his blatant racism.

Gila Courier hearts Franks "enemy of humanity"

by David Safier

The conservative blog Gila Courier chimes in on Trent Franks' "enemy of humanity" comment about Obama. Looks like they've got themselves a new hero. Step aside Joe Wilson, Joe (not named Joe) the Plumber (not really a plumber) and every other idiot they've lionized in the past. They're so yesterday!

Representative Trent Franks is really in hot water with the left now. At a speech over the weekend Franks criticized President Obama for authorizing tax dollars for abortions oversees. Franks added that Obama was an “enemy of humanity.” The statement is essentially correct, especially regarding the humanity of the unborn.

We salute Congressman Franks for his moral clarity on the issue of abortion.

Ladies and gentlemen, Rep. Trent Franks

by David Safier Obama is an enemy of humanity. It must be true. Trent Franks said so. UPDATE: Franks didn't mean to say Obama is an enemy of humanity. Bethany Haley, spokeswoman for Franks, said the congressman was referring to...

HEY REPUBLICAN RUBES!

Yeah, you.  Mr. and Mrs. dumbass Arizona Republican.  Did you know President Obama's health reform features death panels and that there's still a question as to whether President Obama has produced a valid birth certificate?

While most thoughtful Republicans have rejected this sort of juvenile gutter politics, you  have to hand it to the Rethuglicans in Arizona's Congressional delegation, they know their base.  And they know that nobody ever lost a primary in Arizona by underestimating the intelligence of the Arizona Republican voter.

Sen. John McCain must be running scared knowing that he will face uberwingnut Minute Man Chris Simcox in a Republican primary.

A lowered-bar compliment to Trent Franks

by David Safier
On Countdown tonight, there was an episode where someone chased after Republican Congress people with a video camera asking them if they thought Obama is a natural born U.S. citizen. Some ducked the question completely, some said they need more evidence, and some said they think maybe he was born in the U.S.

Only Arizona's Trent Franks (R, CD-2) had the guts to come out with a "Yes, he was born in Hawaii, no question about it" answer. Apparently Franks had his staff check this out. When he saw the birth announcements in two Hawaii newspapers, he decided, you couldn't possibly make that up.

Lazy Posting: National Journal Liberal/Conservative Ratings

The National Journal has released their 2008 Vote Ratings. The results are really no surprise, but after the jump are the ratings for the Arizona delegation, broken up by “issue categories”. I’ll post the Senate ratings later.

Note: The ratings are percentiles, so a member having a rating of 75 would be have a more liberal voting record than three quarters of his or her collegues.

ECONOMY:

Grijalva and Pastor tied with 63 others for most liberal. Flake and Franks tied with six others for least liberal.

SOCIAL:

Grijalva and Pastor tied with 78 others for most liberal. Flake, Franks and Shadegg tied with 42 others for least liberal.

Republican Whips Wants Your Input

January 30, 2009 - Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) today announced the launch of http://republicanwhip.house.gov/jobs, a new website outlining the House Republican Economic Recovery Plan. The website details the smarter, simpler stimulus plan proposed by House Republicans that will create twice the jobs at half the price of the economic package that Democrats forced through the House despite bipartisan opposition.

Franks stated, “American families and job creating small businesses are facing unprecedented challenges, which is why House Republicans have proposed an Economic Recovery Plan that will actually create jobs for the people of the Arizona’s Second Congressional District. We believe that the focus of any stimulus package must be on helping working families and small businesses.

Franks Statement on Democrats’ Trillion Dollar Spending Bill
Rejects “Stimulus” Spending Package as Yet Another Flawed Government Bailout

January 28, 2009 - U.S. Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) gave the following statement today as the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, by a vote of 244-188. Despite repeated calls from Republicans to replace misguided spending measures with pro-growth tax relief, congressional Democrats pushed through the largest borrowing-and-spending bill in American history.

“Obviously there is no limit to Democrats’ capacity to contort the English language in their attempt to depict today’s bill, a massive government spending spree, as a “stimulus” for an ailing economy.
