Ad: Local doctors support health care reform

by David Safier

More than 40 doctors signed an ad that appeared in this morning's Star supporting health care reform. Here is a copy of the complete ad.

This is how it begins:

One in 5 Tucsonans and one in 4 Phoenicians have no healthcare insurance. That is 108,000 and 381,000 people left vulnerable to catastrophe, in just our two largest cities. Our country spends twice as much as other nations that cover all their citizens and yet we leave millions without coverage.

Those with private healthcare insurance find that when a serious health event occurs, coverage is far from complete. The leading cause of bankruptcy is due to medical expenses, and 3/4 of these bankruptcies occurred with citizens who had insurance.

The Farley Report 9-1-09

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Rep. Steve Farley (D-Tucson) is back after a hiatus with the Farley Report:

It's been a month since I last wrote you. On the budget front--despite a whole lot of talk and drama--nothing has happened.

It really is like living in that great movie Groundhog Day, where Bill Murray keeps waking up to the same day where the same things happen no matter how he tries to change his behavior. Except these shenanigans are much less entertaining -- real people (like you and me) are really going to get hurt.

After weeks in Special Session #3, the Republican majority managed to send Governor Brewer the same budget that was on her desk a month ago and was vetoed.

Talking Points Memo reports Twelve Carry Guns -- Including Assault Rifle -- Outside Obama Event:

About 12 people were carrying guns, including at least one semi-automatic assault rifle, outside a building where President Obama was speaking today.

No one was arrested outside the VFW National Convention in Phoenix, according to the Associated Press, where hundreds of people demonstrated both for and against health care reform. There are no reports that the 12 were part of an organized group.

The man spotted carrying the assault rifle and a pistol, who gave his name only as "Chris", was asked why he was armed.

DNC ads praise Reps. Giffords and Kirkpatrick for health care work

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Democratic National Committee's Organizing for America arm is launching radio spots praising two centrist Arizona congresswomen for "taking on the lobbyists and the special interests and standing up for us and our families" and "working every day to make sure we have affordable quality health care." AZ/DC Blog: DNC ads praise Giffords, Kirkpatrick for health-care work:

The ads give some support to Democratic Reps. Gabrielle Giffords and Ann Kirkpatrick as they talk to constituents about the ongoing health-care reform debate. The House last week adjourned for its August district work period and the Senate is expected to do the same at the end of this week.

Quick Take

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Sunday Arizona Daily Star turned over its opinion page today to a discussion of health insurance reform from Sen. John McCain First, reform must do no harm, Sen. Jon Kyl Changes should not be rushed, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Health-care reform is our moon shot, and Rep. Raúl Grijalva Single-payer plan would fix the system.

Blah, Blah, Blah - more talking points redux.

The most substantive opinion was that of Star Editor Sarah Garrecht Gassen Reforming health care. Keep up the good work, Sarah.

Contact your elected representatives in Congress and tell them this:

"I want the same health insurance my members of Congress have."

(hint: it's a single-payer public plan)

Members of Congress should not enjoy the benefits of a health insurance plan that they seek to deny to their own constituents. If it's not good enough for us, then they shouldn't have it either.

It's time, Representative Giffords

by David Safier
On Saturday, July 11, Raúl Grijalva is hosting a health care rally (11:30am [doors open at 11] at the Tucson Convention Center, North Exhibition Hall, 260 S. Church Ave.). Here is his statement.

“We need legislation that guarantees healthcare coverage that is affordable, high-quality, accessible and which lowers costs for all consumers, regardless of age. We need a single payer system or at least an enhanced Medicare-like public health option. We need health care reform that takes care of patients, not the insurance industry.”

Couldn't be clearer. Single payer, best choice. Public option, acceptable compromise.

In Memoriam: James F. McNulty, Jr.

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Almost lost in the crush of news coming out of our state capitol this week was the sad news of the passing of former Congressman Jim McNulty. I did not know Jim well, but I did volunteer on his campaigns back in the early 1980s, and I saw him frequently at Democratic Party events over the years since. He was always pleasant to me with a ready smile and a quick Irish wit. He was a good and decent man dedicated to public service.

The Arizona Daily Star published the news of his death, from which I have edited and rearranged some of the paragraphs

Change Can't Wait...For Your Checkbook

Representative Gabrielle Giffords just voted for you to give an additional $175 to the federal government.

Yesterday, while you were on your way home from work for the weekend, Ms. Giffords voted "Aye" on HR 2454, the "American Clean Energy and Security Act."

The title of the legislation states it is "To create clean energy jobs, achieve energy independence, reduce global warming pollution and transition to a clean energy economy." One would think that clean energy jobs are created when there is commercial viability for them.

This from someone who drives around her district in an SUV and races motorcycles.

In an Associated Press report, the Congressional Budget Office estimates the average household impact will be $175 per year.

Taxing and spending to support liberal ideology completed, Rep. Giffords voted in favor of a six day recess.
