Republican Born Again Deficit Virgins

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

John Perr is one of the better economics bloggers. He posted this piece at crooksandliars.com Born Again Deficit Virgins:

Everything you need to know about the descent of the conservative movement into a hypocritical caricature is illustrated by two of its proudest constituencies: Republican deficit hawks and so-called "born again virgins." Having already violated the moral strictures they claim to hold dearest, each now asks the American people to join them in pretending their sin never happened. But unlike a generation of Republican leaders who built a mountain of national debt for the United States, the secondary virgins only screwed themselves.

Time to show Traitor Joe the door

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

(h/t IWR Cartoon - Traitor Joe's)

Nietzsche: God is dead.

God: Nietzsche is dead.

Lieberman: Health care reform is dead.

The next line is up to you, Democrats.

Sen. Joe Lieberman (the narcissist "party of me!") represents the "Insurance Capital of the World" -- Connecticut is headquarters to 72 insurance companies. Connecticut also has the highest concentration of insurance company jobs of any state - 3.2 percent of total state employment in 2005. Insuring Prosperity - HartfordInfo.org

So it should come as no surprise to anyone that Joe Lieberman would be opposed to a public option that would force one of his state's principal businesses to compete by lowering the cost of health insurance premiums, rather than continue enjoying their monopolistic power to fix prices, exempt from the threat of any anti-trust regulation.

Motivational Speaking

Posted by azBlueMeanie:

I read this week that former president George W. Bush has found a speaking gig at an Oct. 26 "Get Motivated!" business seminar in Fort Worth, TX, where the former president will be the "special guest speaker." Bush Headlining 'Motivational Mega Show' With 'Inspirational Firepower'

This would be the same George W. Bush who was at war with the English language and added Bushisms to the American lexicon?

Today is October 25th, Saint Crispin's Day, the disfavored and long forgotten feast day of Saints Crispin and Crispinian. October 25th is also the date of the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, at which Henry V of England rallied his much smaller forces to victory over the superior French forces of Charles VI with this motivational speech -- recounted in the words of William Shakespeare in his play Henry V.

Reps. Trent Franks an John Shadegg engage in McCarthyism, religious bigotry againt Muslim-Americans

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The right-wing has exhibited a disturbing trend towards a new era of McCarthyism in recent years. But their latest craziness is religious bigotry and fear mongering against Muslim American citizens.

In the mind of right-wing conspiracy theory loving religious bigots, Muslim Americans are all spies for Islamo-fascism (a term fabricated by the right-wing and of no actual significance) and Islamic sleeper-cell terrorists who are conspiring to "Islamize" a "Christian" America. Seriously. I kid you not.

A quartet of Republican Congressmen, including Arizona's own Reps. Trent Franks and John Shadegg, convened a press conference this week to demand that the House Sergeant at Arms investigate the organization Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), because this advocacy organization does what every other advocacy organization does, but they do it while being Muslim.

Democrats prepared to enforce party discipline and unity in the Senate

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

On September 30, 2009 I posted this piece of advice for Democrats Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat: the public option is alive and well:

Let's be clear. The 60 votes senators incessantly talk about is not required to pass a bill. It is a vote for cloture to close debate and to move on to voting for a bill. Democrats have 58 senators and two independents who caucus with the Democrats. They ostensibly have 60 votes for such procedural matters as cloture votes. This is a question of party discipline and unity.

The only way opponents of health care reform with a strong public option can prevent enactment of such a bill is if one or more Democrats side with the Republican obstructionists and against their party leadership on a procedural vote for cloture.

Why does the right hate America?

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Remember how the American right seized upon the "Miracle on Ice" in 1980 when a ragtag U.S. hockey team defeated the World Champion Soviet Union team and went on to win the gold medal at the Lake Placid, N.Y. Winter Olympics? Fans waved American flags and chanted "USA! USA! USA!" America was back baby, and flag waving patriotism was in fashion.

Ever since, the American right has been wrapping itself in the flag and chanting "USA! USA! USA!" not just at Olympic sporting events, but in support of the Gulf War (1991), post 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan (2001-), and the Iraq War (2003-).

Media Advisory: Questions for GOP Tucson City Council Candidates

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

I understand that the Arizona Daily Star is finally going to get around to covering the Tucson City Council races -- well, kinda.

The Star's lame idea of covering the City Council races amounts to having reporter Tim Steller hang out with the teabaggers of Tucson Tea Party at their "Tucson’s Last Stand" shindig for the GOP Tucson City Council candidates. Blog: Are Tucson 'Tea Partiers' hype or the real deal? (The Theme is taken from Glenn Beck's use of the Alamo as a "last stand." Yeah, they were all killed or executed, Glenn. Not the imagery I think you were going for.

The GOP Trojan Horse of Tort Reform

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Republican plan for health care reform has nothing at all to do with health care per se. Republicans, including our own Senator McNasty, have trotted out the GOP Trojan Horse of "tort reform" - it's those "junk lawsuits" driving up medical costs! - as a panacea for reducing the cost of medical care. "Yeah, that's the ticket!" as SNL's Tommy Flanagan, the Pathological Liar would say. "Yeah, its all those patients faking dying and those damn trial lawyers!"

The Republican Party always claims to be the party of "personal responsibility" - unless, of course, you happen to be in the medical profession (a special interest that tends to make substantial campaign contributions to Republicans).

Arizona Daily Star publishes revisionist history, shills for GOP

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

I have been a resident of Tucson since the early 1960's. I have started each morning, for good or ill, by reading the Arizona Daily Star.

At one time, the Arizona Daily Star was an award winning newspaper with reporters and editors that demonstrated excellence in journalism. That newspaper has not existed for some time now.

There has been a precipitous decline in the quality of reporting and the opinion pages since Lee Enterprises purchased the newspaper. While the Arizona Daily Star still has a few good reporters and on occasion demonstrates flashes of its former self, on most days it appears to be in a race to the bottom to compete with the likes of Rupert Murdoch's yellow rag New York Post.
