Frank Rich on GOP Stalinist Purges

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

New York Times columnist Frank Rich has more on the GOP civil war in the NY-23 special election for Congress. There will be no "winner" in this race. The big loser, however, is the Republican Party. The G.O.P. Stalinists Invade Upstate New York:

[P]reposterous as it sounds, the real action migrated to New York’s 23rd, a rural Congressional district abutting Canada. That this pastoral setting could become a G.O.P. killing field, attracting an all-star cast of combatants led by Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, William Kristol and Newt Gingrich, is a premise out of a Depression-era screwball comedy. But such farces have become the norm for the conservative movement — whether the participants are dressing up in full “tea party” drag or not.

The Odd Couple to visit BASIS

by David Safier
No, not that odd couple. Much, much odder.

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and the Rev. Al Sharpton are scheduled to tour acclaimed charter school BASIS Tucson for a few hours on Oct. 1, BASIS spokeswoman Arwynn Mattix confirmed Monday.

This is part of a nationwide tour.

Along with U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Gingrich and Sharpton are embarking on a multicity tour — starting Sept. 29 in Philadelphia — to draw attention to President Obama's education platform.

This whole thing is worrisome to me. We have two basic philosophical camps about what's wrong with education right now, and which one dominates will determine a lot about what direction we take in the next few years.

Health care debate all over the board

by David Safier
Here's a quote every Democrat playing duck-and-delay games with health care legislation should carry keep in mind.

Republican Senator Jim DeMint said if they can delay health care legislation until September, they can kill it.

"If we’re able to stop Obama on this it will be his Waterloo. It will break him," he said.

This is probably an overstatement, but the Obama presidency will be seriously damaged if one of his signature issues goes down in flames.

During the Clinton administration, Gingrich feared a Democratic health care bill. He saw that as a way for Democrats to cement their majority, so he knew he had to pull out all the stops to defeat it.

Who speaks for the GOP? "No One" does

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Gallup has a new poll out which asked the burning question, "Who is the main person who speaks for the Republican Party today?"

Top response: No opinion   37%

Next top response: No one 14%

That's 51% of respondents who cannot readily identify who is the main person who speaks for the Republican Party today.

Gallup had to drill down into the polling data to come up with this headline: Limbaugh, Gingrich, Cheney Seen as Speaking for GOP So that's what "RNC" stands for: Rush + Newt + Cheney = "leadership vacuum."

Let's take a look at the poll results:

Gallup analysis:

Additionally, no one person dominates even among Republicans who are able to name someone who speaks for their party.

Meet the New GOP, same as the Old GOP

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Hill has a great piece about GOP concern that "Cheney, Gingrich and Rove have all sucked up time on cable news networks and sparked new controversies."

Love it:

Strategists privately stress the GOP needs to move past old faces, and one veteran Republican said the attacks could be effective.

“The conservatism of the 21st century should be divorced from personality politics and simply be about ideas,” said Craig Shirley, a biographer of former President Ronald Reagan. “But since the GOP appears to be bankrupt of ideas, this line of attack will be effective from the standpoint of putting them on the defensive again.

David Weigel at the Windy happened to catch the latest idea from the militiamen who are starting to see their paranoid ranks rising:

A peaceful demonstration of at least a million — hey, if we can 10 million, even better — but at least one million armed militia men marching on Washington. A peaceful demonstration. No shooting, no one gets hurt. Just a demonstration. The only difference from any typical demonstration is we will all be armed.

Clinton crushes wingnuttia talking point of the week

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

I told you earlier this week about the wingnuttia talking point of the week, Obama's greeting of Venezuela strong man Hugo Chavez. "OMG! He shook his hand!" Apparently this is a sign of the pending Apocalypse and the end of the world as we know it.

This wingnuttia talking point advanced by Dr. Newt "The Professor" Gingrich and repeated ad naseum within the wingnuttia mighty Wurlitzer echo chamber of Faux News is that treating our opponents in the world with simple courtesy and a willingness to speak to them face-to-face is a sign of American weakness and threatens our national security.

Wingnuttia, led by Dr. Newt "The Professor" Gingrich said Obama's handshake with Venezuela strong man Hugo Chavez poses a grave threat to our national security. During an interview on The Today Show Monday morning, Gingrich responded to a question this way:

Q: But we certainly have mended relationships with countries that have hated us in the past. Russia comes to mind, China comes to mind.

GINGRICH: But we didn't rush over, smile, and greet Russian dictators.
