Rep. Grijalva: Public Option is Key to Health Care Reform

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Rep. Raul Grijalva and Rep. Mike Honda penned the following guest opinion on the Politico blog Public option is key to health reform:

Seventy-two percent of the American people support a robust public health insurance option that is available to everyone. A public option is good for our families, is good for the American economy and is supported by the American public. As Congress moves forward with health care reform legislation this summer, we must include in our final reform package a robust public option linked to an existing federal provider network — for example, the Medicare network.

The current system is broken.

Occasionally, Even a Blind Hog Can Find an Acorn

by Jeff Latas
Recently, Russell Pearce did introduce some legislation that will affect the public good and benefit those in need. His legislation on the Military Family Relief Fund is sound, logical, and solves problems encountered by grieving military family members financially struggling after extremely traumatic events that would devastate anyone’s life.

Ironically, the legislation was so good that the Arizona Democratic Veterans' Caucus held a press conference calling on the Arizona legislature to pass SB 1176, a bill that will deliver much needed assistance to Arizona's military families who suffer from hardships presented when a loved one is injured or killed while serving our country.

National Healthcare Day of Action in Arizona

Join thousands of single-payer supporters in a nationwide week of action to support improved Medicare for all (HR 676).  Single-payer activists will be gathering all over the country to say, "Healthcare, yes; Insurance companies, no."

When: Saturday, May 30th, 2009, 10:00am-11:30am

Where: Office of Congressman Harry Mitchell

       7201 E. Camelback Rd

       Scottsdale, Arizona

47 million Americans are uninsured. Private insurance rates are rising faster than inflation and our incomes. By 2025 the cost of private health insurance will exceed our projected income.

A national, single-payer healthcare system is the only healthcare reform option that will cover every American resident while saving us billions of dollars. The majority of Americans want it. The majority of physicians want it. The only thing missing is the political will in Washington.

Towards Understanding Blue Dog Democrats

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The House Democrats Blue Dog Coalition purports to "appeal to mainstream values of the American public," and they are "dedicated to a core set of beliefs that transcend partisan politics, including a deep commitment to the financial stability and national security of the United States." There are presently 47 Members of the Blue Dog Coalition, including our own Rep. Gabriel Giffords (AZ-8). Rep. Harry Mitchell (AZ-5) oddly enough is not an official member, but a Blue Dog wannabe (he has applied but has not been accepted).

Giffords frequently votes with the party leadership and will defend her votes, while Mitchell frequently opposes Democratic spending, tax and budget proposals and sends out press releases trumpeting his opposition vote to his own party.

Obama Budget Outline Approved by Congress

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Republican talking heads on radio and cable "news" outlets like Faux News like to point to the House Democrats "Blue Dog Coalition" as evidence of "bipartisan" opposition to President Obama's agenda, while ignoring the plank in their own eye. (I will explain in a later post why this is mostly nonsense for the uninitiated.) In fact, the Obama budget received more support than any previous budget in the past twelve years.

Once again, not a single member of the Grand Obstructionist Party voted for the budget resolution in the House or Senate. From the New York Times Budgets Approved, With No G.

“President’s Obama’s presence will highlight the excellent work and achievements of ASU and speaks volumes to the quality of faculty and students at the school.

Lazy Posting: National Journal Liberal/Conservative Ratings

The National Journal has released their 2008 Vote Ratings. The results are really no surprise, but after the jump are the ratings for the Arizona delegation, broken up by “issue categories”. I’ll post the Senate ratings later.

Note: The ratings are percentiles, so a member having a rating of 75 would be have a more liberal voting record than three quarters of his or her collegues.

ECONOMY:

Grijalva and Pastor tied with 63 others for most liberal. Flake and Franks tied with six others for least liberal.

SOCIAL:

Grijalva and Pastor tied with 78 others for most liberal. Flake, Franks and Shadegg tied with 42 others for least liberal.

Gallego Off the Hook

Phoenix City Councilmen Michael Nowakowski’s chief aide is apparently off the hook after being accused of verbal harassment and creating a hostile work environment for a Phoenix College student. Nowakowski’s aide, Ruben Gallego, was accused of berating and intimidating 20-year-old intern, Maria Alaniz. (Arizona Republic article) Immediately after filing the complaint, Alaniz was laid off.

According to the Republic:

Gallego became upset, Alaniz said, when she failed to inform another councilman that Nowakowski was running late to a meeting.

According to Alaniz, Gallego called her into his office the morning of Feb. 4 and began yelling and pounding his desk so loud that it caught the attention of several aides working in other council offices on City Hall’s 11th floor.

The state's two senators - Republicans John McCain and Jon Kyl - both plan to miss the event at Dobson High School. They say they were neither invited nor informed of the president's visit to their home turf in time to alter their plans and show up for the speech.

Republican Gov. Jan Brewer greeted the president when he arrived Tuesday afternoon at Sky Harbor International Airport, and plans to attend the speech in Mesa, said spokesman Paul Senseman.
