Time to Take Action on The Public Option

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Blogger mcjoan at Daily Kos is a daily must read for the latest on the health care bills moving through Congress. I will reproduce her recent post followed by additional commentary. Public Option Action:

The Senate Finance Committee will take up the Rockefeller and Schumer amendments which were supposed to have been debated today, on Tuesday. The reasons for the delay are unclear, but it gives us a few more days to impress upon those Democratic Senators who haven't been as helpful on creating real, comprehensive reform. As of now, we know of three public option amendments that will be offered.

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) calls the GOP bluff on government run health care

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) has emerged as a leader for a Medicare-for-all single-payer health care option.

On Thursday, July 30th, the anniversary date of the enactment of Medicare, Rep. Weiner offered an amendment to HR 3200, America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009, rhetorically proposing to repeal Medicare - that "socialist" government run health care system that has been so successful and is so popular with elderly Americans. Health Care -- 44 Years Of Medicare Success Time for Republicans to "put up or shut up." He of course was voting against it.

Congressman Weiner: "I dare you, I double dare you, vote yes on it, then go home and explain to your constituents how you're so philosophically opposed to publicly funded healthcare that you voted to eliminate Medicare on its 44th aniversary.

The Republican 10 Point Plan for Health Care

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

One of my favorite economics bloggers, Jon Perr at crooksandliars.com, has a detailed explanation of The Republican 10 Point Plan for Health Care;

After Rep. Roy Blunt, leader of the supposed House GOP Health Care Solutions Group, suggested Thursday that Republicans won't offer a health care plan of their own, Minority Leader John Boehner insisted one was still in the works.

Of course, the Republican plan as in 1993 is to stop health care reform at all costs to prevent an enduring Democratic majority. Bill Kristol, who told Republicans 16 years ago that there was "no crisis" justifying health care reform then, now simply calls on his party to "

President Obama on health care reform at Children's Hospital

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

President Obama addressed health care reform on Monday at Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C. Obama directly challenged the partisan comment from Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) last week.

Text of prepared Remarks by the President on Health Care at Children's Hospital (excerpt):

Now, there are some in this town who are content to perpetuate the status quo, are in fact fighting reform on behalf of powerful special interests. There are others who recognize the problem, but believe -- or perhaps, hope -- that we can put off the hard work of insurance reform for another day, another year, another decade.

Just the other day, one Republican senator [DeMint] said -- and I'm quoting him now -- "If we're able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo.

What's really going on?

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

You are all probably aware by now that on Friday a bipartisan group of six senators sent a letter to the White House asking to slow down the process towards health care reform. This bipartisan group of senators consisted of Ben Nelson (D-NE), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Joe Lieberman (I-CT), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Ron Wyden (D-OR). Obama warns Congress not to 'slow down'

Ron Wyden? He's one of the white hat good guys in the Senate. Why would he add his name to a letter signed by the perpetual whiners of the Senate?

I reviewed the New York Times, Washington Post and Los Angeles Times for some clue.

Will Walmart live up to their PR on Health Care this time?

There has been a lot of talk this week about the surprising move by Walmart to publically support President Obama’s health care reform plan, supposedly positioning themselves as a leader in the fight to bring health care to all Americans. As we mentioned in a post on our blog yesterday, this might be easier to swallow if Walmart had any history of leading by example. Instead, they usually do just the opposite.

Given Walmart’s long record of trying to build a positive reputation on ineffective work-arounds to health care coverage for employee, the recent revelations about sacrificing quality for cheap

President Obama Takes Health Care Reform to The People

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Taking health care reform on the road today to a town hall in Green Bay, Wisconsin, President Obama reiterated his call for a government-run insurance option as part of his a plan to remake the nation's health care system, saying that a public plan will provide the competition needed to keep private insurance companies "honest and keep prices down." Obama Touts Public Plan at Health Care Town Hall

Obama said that his administration is working on a health insurance exchange that would allow people to "one-stop shop" for a health care plan by allowing consumers to compare benefits and prices between the private and public health care plans.

What Will Be Obama's Legacy On Health Care?

Jefferson was the principle writer of the Declaration of Independence.   Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.   Roosevelt instituted Social Security.  Each are great accomplishments and arguably the enduring legacies of these past presidential luminaries.  These achievements were not the product of misplaced prudence, excessive pragmatism, and half-measures.  They were the product of bold, deliberate, and courageous action.  If Obama's first 100 days in office are any measure of things to come, he is well on his way to a historically productive presidency.  But what will be his enduring legacy?  If he can temporarily put aside his instinctual caution and penchant for compromise, I believe it will be true single payer universal health care reform.
