Another version of "Swing district Dems need a strong health care bill"

by David Safier
I posted about a Howard Dean interview where he said,

I believe that if we don’t pass the health care plan with the public option, it won’t be health care reform, and we’ll lose a tremendous number of seats in 2010.

My point was, Giffords, Mitchell, Kirkpatrick and other Reps in swing districts need an Obama success on health care. That means a bill with a strong public option that actually does what it sets out to do.

Robert Creamer on HuffPo agrees.

. . . in fact, history shows that these swing district Democrats have the most to lose if Congress fails to pass President Obama's sweeping health care proposal -- and for that matter the other major components of his economic agenda.

Howard Dean nails it twice

by David Safier
Howard Dean has one of those very short interviews they run every week in the front pages of the NY Times Sunday Magazine. He makes two comments that are among the most thoughtful I've heard lately on the subject of health care legislation.

The first:

I believe that if we don’t pass the health care plan with the public option, it won’t be health care reform, and we’ll lose a tremendous number of seats in 2010.

I wish Democrats in tough districts, like Arizona's Giffords, Mitchell and Kirkpatrick, would understand that their political fortunes rise and fall with Obama's. If in November, 2010, people think Obama is a strong, effective president, Dems will be able to ride the wave to reelection.

Doctor Howard Dean: Democrats only need 51 votes in Senate to pass health care reform

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Doctor Howard Dean was a guest on Countdown last night and he made the point that I have made here previously: Democrats don't need 60 votes for cloture in the Senate to end a filibuster by Republicans of health care reform. Only 51 votes are needed in the Senate because the health care reform bill falls under the purview of budget reconciliation, thanks to the Rules Committee. 'Countdown with Keith Olbermann' for Tuesday, July 7:

OLBERMANN: [W]ith [Al] Franken now on the health committee, can Harry Reid—if he can‘t muster 60 votes for health care reform—are we sure that he can muster 60 votes to stop Republicans from filibustering health care reform?

DEAN: We don‘t need 60 votes from health care reform.

Dr. Howard Dean's Rx for Real Health Care Reform

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Former Democratic Party Chairman Dr. Howard Dean has a new book scheduled for release on July 22, 2009 entitled Howard Dean's Prescription for Real Health Care Reform. Here is a synopsis:

Synopsis

Americans have pondered how to reform healthcare since the days of Harry Truman. But for most Americans, little has changed—except that healthcare costs have soared, health insurance companies have grown bigger and more oppressive to both doctors and patients, and today even those Americans who pay dearly for health insurance frequently find that their policies don't adequately cover them when they need their coverage most.

Something has got to give.
