Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Now that local elections are all but over for the counting in Tucson (and a possible recount in Ward 3), it's time once again to update the early filers with the Arizona Secretary of State for 2010. You can play along at home at http://www.azsos.gov/cfs/CommitteeSearch.aspx

The big news today: Terry Goddard, the state's highest-elected Democrat, filed paperwork Friday morning announcing that he is exploring a run for governor next year. Political Insider Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and former Arizona Democratic Party Chairman and 2006 U.S. Senate candidate Jim Pederson previously announced that they would not run. Former Tempe Mayor Neil Giuliano has also decided not to run

The Colbert Report Mocks Arizona's "Green Mile"

The New York Times recently reported on Arizona privatizing its prisons, including turning over control of its Death Row to private companies. Arizona May Turn Death Row Over to Private Companies:

It is a dangerous place to patrol, and Arizona spends $4.7 million each year to house inmates like [Dale] Hausner in a super-maximum-security prison. But in a first in the criminal justice world, the state’s death row inmates could become the responsibility of a private company.

State officials will soon seek bids from private companies for 9 of the state’s 10 prison complexes that house roughly 40,000 inmates, including the 127 here on death row.

Farley Report, Oct 6, 2009

Rep. Farley (LD28) ponders the state of the state, and it ain't great:
Howdy,  Friends O'Farley...

Here we are in October, and our deficit is now $1.5 billion and growing.

Constitutionally, the Legislature is supposed to have delivered a balanced budget on June 30, but no one seems to want to enforce that clause. Perhaps this could finally be a good use for Sheriff Joe?

Dressing the Governor and the Legislative majority in pink stripes and locking them into Tent City could finally force an agreement of some kind. Not that I want to spend too much time thinking of the images that go with that scenario.

Opposition to Prop. 200 continues to grow

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Pima County Republican Party, the Tucson Association of Realtors, the Southern Arizona Home builders Association, and the Tucson Police Officers and Firefighters Associations are the principle sponsors of the Public Safety First Initiative (akaProp. 200) which will appear on the City of Tucson November ballot.

The initiative seeks to compel and make mandatory staffing goals for police and fire personnel that the Tucson City Council has already approved in 2006 as part of a 10-year plan. The City Council had to put that plan on hold in 2008 because of the current economic recession and steep decline in tax revenues to pay for it.

A psychologist looks at right wing authoritarianism

by David Safier
Todd offered this comment to the post, Is it a proto-fascist movement?

A Canadian Psychologist, Bob Altemeyer, has been looking for years at what makes people more or less likely to adhere to a right-wing authoritarianism. His research has been going on for 40 years and has a wealth of data and has largely withstood any serious criticism. Essentially people such as this have 3 traits - 1) high degree of submissiveness to those who they believe are authorities with a great credulousness to anything that support their beliefs no matter how irrational, 2) Highly aggressive to outgroups and 3) a high degree of Conventionalism in regards to adhering to social norms and traditions.

A kind of popular and free summary of his research can be found here :

I think it sheds a great deal of light on what is happening.
