Arizona Legislators Urge Obama Administration to Pass Health Care Reform Including Public Option

21 Arizona state legislators have joined a nationwide movement of state lawmakers which now number over 600 state legislators from 46 states who have signed on to a support letter organized by the Progressive States Network, a national partner of Health Care for America Now.  These legislators join faith leaders, small business owners and community leaders in their support of President Obama's efforts to pass comprehensive health care reform, including the choice of a public health insurance option, this year.

The national letter will be delivered to a White House meeting with Secretary of Health & Human Services Kathleen Sebelius and Director of the White House Office of Health Reform Nancy Ann-DeParle on June 17th in response to the Obama Administration's new initiative to see input on health care reform from state legislators.

Just say "no"

Rep. Jack Brown is running low in the patience department.
The St. Johns Democrat said he was casting ‘no” votes on House bills Monday as a protest against the hurry-up-and-wait pace of the state Legislature.
“I think we've spent way too long not doing anything, messing around — whatever verb you want to put in there — since January,” said Brown, who is the Legislature's longest-serving member with 32 years of service.
Brown noted the day's calendar had more than two dozen bills, which should have been dealt with weeks ago. Better planning could have averted the logjam, he said, so he'd ...

Rep. Jack Brown: The Arizona Legislature is wasting $10,000 per day

From the Arizona Republic Political Insider: Senate inaction proving costly:

Rep. Jack Brown, D-St. Johns, made a rare floor speech Tuesday to mark the 100th day of the legislative session.

Brown, the longest-serving lawmaker, noted that the Legislature is setting several records - as in a record number of bills not being acted upon. The Senate continues to forbid any hearings until a budget bill is written, passed and on the governor's desk.

That means that bills debated and voted on by the House are stacking up, waiting for action across the courtyard at the Senate.

"We're missing out every day," he said.

Brown also pulled out his calculator and made some quick computations on how much money all this inaction is costing taxpayers. His conclusion: about $10,000 a day, counting salary and the per-diem that lawmakers receive.

"I don't know if we're worth that or not," Brown said.

Willie Lee Your Name Is Not Jack Brown

The State Library board will be giving their annual Polly Rosenbaum Award to long time legislator Jack Brown for his work on behalf of libraries.

The award is given named for Polly Rosenbaum who served in the legislature from the death of her husband in 1949 until her defeat in the 1994 Republican sweep, nearly half of the time that Arizona has been a state. Brown, on the other hand, has only been in the legislature a paltry 35 years.

House speaker vows to overcome tough times

Kirk Adams paid homage to the courage and determination of Arizona's pioneers moments after he was sworn in as speaker of the House of Representatives.

They came to a harsh and unsettled land amid dire warnings that they could never succeed, he said. The tribute to their quiet toughness was a deliberate message to Arizona lawmakers who were sworn in Monday to a new term in which they must close a budget deficit of roughly $1.6 billion for the fiscal year.

The times ahead will be tough, said Adams, a Mesa Republican. But the difficulties will be overcome, he said.

"I have been told that there is no way we will succeed," Adams said of the lean budget times that will dominate the legislative session.
