Special Session Update: Rep. Steve Farley provides the play by play

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Rep. Steve Farley (D-Tucson) in his latest Farley Report provides the play by play of the dirty dealings by Republicans in the Arizona Legislature.

"I know it's a few days early for the monthly edition of the Farley Report, but there is action to report on the budget front.

Unfortunately, that is not good news.

You will recall in the last report I described a unanimous vote to restore and even increase funding to education and other important areas, and the hopeful beginning of negotiations between legislative Republicans and Democrats.

At the very start of those talks, Republican leadership made us promise that there would be no side deals with the Governor, unless all parties agreed to it.

It's July 16th - Do You Know Where Your Legislators Are?

Arizona's budget deficit is now estimated at $3.4 billion.  During the worst budget crisis in state history, many of our Republican state legislators are attending an ALEC convention in Atlanta, Georgia listening to the likes of Zell Miller suggest that Rahm Emanuel put "Gorilla Glue" on President Obama's chair to prevent him from "gallivanting around" the globe.

The Arizona Education Network reports:

The list of our "representatives" who are reportedly bailed out of Arizona for a little Georgia hob-nobbing this week:  Representatives Cecil Ash, Ray Barnes, Nancy Barto, Sam Crump, John Kavanagh, Debbie Lesko, John McComish, Nancy McLain and Steve Yarbrough.

In addition to Senate President Robert Burns, Senators Pamela Gorman, Jack Harper, Barbara Leff, Al Melvin and Russell Pearce also on the list of ALEC conference attendees.

Budget Update: Sen. Russell Pearce fails to deliver Republican votes in his Senate Appropriations Committee

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The man who would be king of Arizona (if not for the inconvenience of those pesky elections) failed to deliver the necessary Republican votes today in his Senate Appropriations Committee on the first of a package of 12 "feed" bills for the compromise budget deal between the Accidental Governor and her GOP insane clown possee leadership. Arizona budget deal takes a step backward:

A tenuous budget deal between Gov. Jan Brewer and GOP legislative leaders took a step backward Monday morning, with the Senate Appropriations Committee rejecting a key portion of the plan.

The feed bill, Senate Bill 1470, failed in the committee on a 4-4 vote — a majority vote is necessary for passage.

Hiccup: Senate committee rejects feed bill, deals budget setback

A tenuous budget deal between Gov. Jan Brewer and GOP legislative leaders took a step backward this morning, with the Senate Appropriations Committee rejecting a key portion of the plan.
The feed bill, Senate Bill 1470, failed in the committee on a 4-4 vote (a majority vote is necessary for passage). Republican Sens. Ron Gould, Jack Harper and Steve Pierce joined with Democratic Sen. Paula Aboud to oppose the measure, the first in a series of bills that make up the budget package for fiscal 2010.
Following the vote, Sen. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, immediately recessed the committee. Moments later, the committee reconvened to ...

Farley Report, June 16, 2009

Some wild happenings at the Arizona Legislature.  Yee-haw!  We have a gen-u-wine shootout between the Republican Gov and the Republican "leadership" of the State Legislature.  Who will shut down the government first.  Place your bets now.  One thing for sure, this is government of Republicans, by Republicans, and for Republicans.  We won't forget to remind voters of this come election time, will we? Ya see, Republicans believe that government can't do anything right and when you elect them they try to prove it. They're sure doing a heck of a job.

Your weekly update courtesy of Rep. Farley from down yonder.

Howdy,  Friends O'Farley.

Bob Burns: Don't let the voters decide, because they might not make the decision I want them to make

Bob Burns, the Republican State Senate President, has announced that he is hesitant to put any proposal for a tax increase to fund public services to the ballot because he is worried that the voters might approve it.

From a Howard Fischer story in the EV Tribune -
The top Senate Republican is shying away from putting two measures on a special ballot this spring, at least in part because he fears voters will not decide the issues the way he wants.

Senate President Bob Burns, R-Peoria, said Monday he has a “gut feeling” that a proposal for a temporary tax hike would turn into a one-sided campaign, with his personal position against the increase on the losing side.

Even the Liberal New Republic…

The New Republic has posted an article with a quick take on the 2010 US Senate race here. On the Democratic side, they mention that Janet Napolitano would have been a strong candidate but for her jumping to Homeland Security. They don’t mention any other possibility. They quote Jorge Luis Garcia as saying that he hasn’t heard about anyone else, which might indicate that the “Draft John Adams” folks need to get the word out a bit better about their guy.

On the Republican side, they name Jack Harper (Jack Harper!) as a conservative dissatisfied with John McCain that could run. Harper lacks the stature to make a serious challenge from the right, but they fail to mention others that do, like

What Was Weak Last Week

I’ve got a few small items that I neglected to address last week. Now, I can say “After the jump…” like all the classy blogs do.

In a move borrowed from Southern Republican Senators, Basha’s Supermarkets blamed the UFCW for layoffs last week. Bear in mind that Basha’s only unionized employees are in a handful of stores that they purchased from other chains. It can’t be the overall economy that’s the problem, it’s all that power that Big Labor has here in Arizona.

The Arizona Guardian reported last week that Jack Harper is going to start going after field offices for various state agencies. He thinks that money is being wasted on leases and furniture for offices in far flung areas of the state that he has doesn’t care to visit.

End The Horror…

I couldn’t believe it. The Arizona Guardian made a reference that I, as a fan of early rockabilly, found in excedingly poor taste. They actually refered to Russell Pearce as “The Big Bopper of Budgets.” And they did this on the anniversary of J. P. Richardson’s death! Is nothing sacred? Will they next be comparing Jack Harper to Tommy Blake? Pamela Gorman to Wanda Jackson? Please, please, stop these people before they compare any of them to the great Link Wray!

Plus, they left me with the indelible image of Pearce saying, “Hell-ooo Baby!”
