Update: Unemployment Benefits Extension Approved by Congress

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Arizona's Senator Obstruction, Jon Kyl, tied up the unemployment benefits extension bill in the U.S. Senate for weeks based upon petty partisanship and parliamentary maneuvering.

The bill bogged down in the Senate, first when senators from states with lower jobless rates demanded that the extension apply to all people exhausting their benefits, then with negotiations over adding the homebuyer and business tax credits. Then, Republicans held up floor action when Democrats blocked them from offering amendments on matters unrelated to the base bill.

"Opponents have put up obstacles at every turn to delay the passage of this bill, and as a result of these delaying tactics approximately 200,000 workers have lost their benefits in this last month," said Sen.

Rep. Jeff Flake to Seniors: Screw you Grandma and Grandpa!

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The White House has announced a plan to give seniors and disabled veterans $250 each as part of a mini-economic stimulus plan to compensate them for the fact that there will be no cost of living adjustment (COLA) this year to Social Security benefits because there has been no inflation this past year. White House urges a 2nd $250 payout to seniors, veterans:

The money would go to all Social Security beneficiaries, regardless of their income, as well as disabled veterans, those eligible for railroad retirement payments and people who receive federal and state government pensions instead of Social Security.

Flake will not run for governor

On Monday Sonoran Alliance ran a story about Rep. Jeff Flake. They think he might be running for Governor. Flake was in Tucson on May 8th and hosted an evening reception put on by the local party. While there we did not hear the Congressman once mention a distinctly state issue. Quite the opposite. Flake spoke in detail on national issues.

It is our view that Flake will not be entering the race for governor in 2010. This view has also been backed up by sources who say that he will not enter the fray. We are not saying that he should not or that he would not make a good candidate. He has a pretty good record on social issues and has a solid record on fiscal issues and would immediately be a top tier candidate. It's just not going to happen from what we hear and see.

Tucson Weekly pulls the Yarbrough story together

by David Safier
Mari Herreras of the Tucson Weekly does a terrific job of telling the whole story of Yarbrough, his STO and the various ways he profits from the tuition tax credit legislation. All the pieces of the puzzle are there, laid out in a clear, complete narrative.

And there's this extra added bonus at the end.

The Tucson Weekly also found documentation in SCA's 2007 990 documenting that the organization paid current Arizona Corporation Commissioner Bob Stump $57,000 for fundraising while he was working as a state representative and running for the Corporation Commission seat. While in the Legislature, Stump was also a big supporter of private-school tax credits.

Updated SWAG Re: GOP Primary for Governor in 2010

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

I have heard from reliable sources, but I have not been able to confirm, that John Munger will announce in the near future that he is a candidate for governor. Munger is a partner in the law firm of Munger Chadwick, PLC. Munger is a former State Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party, a former member of the Republican National Committee, and former Pima County Republican Chairman. He has also served as president and member of the Arizona Board of Regents.

Munger recently established ImagineArizona, a political action committee, indicating that he has higher political ambitions.

Those of us who live in Tucson are familiar with Munger as the GOP talking head on the Arizona Illustrated (PBS) segment "Face Off," in which he squares off against Vince Rabago, former Pima County Democratic Party Chairman and a current vice chair of the Arizona Democratic Party.

SWAG Re: GOP Primary for Governor in 2010

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Earlier this week Tedski over at Rum, Romanism and Rebellion speculated that our "Accidental Governor" Jan Brewer would not seek a four year term of her own. There are two schools of thought on this, one school says Jan will not run (I tend to believe this is coming from supporters of other candidates), and the other school says she definitely will run.

I tend to believe Jan will run. Jan Brewer is a career politician (since 1982), it's all she knows. Arizonans enacted term limits to prevent career politicians like Jan Brewer from hanging around too long. How's that been working out for ya?

Tedski says the GOP party establishment candidate for governor is Congressman Jeff Flake (aka the Earmark Slayer).

Red State Socialism

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

One of my favorite economics bloggers, Jon Perr over at Crooks and Liars blog, posted this provocative report:

In just their latest posturing for the 2012 Republican presidential race, governors Sarah Palin (R-AK) and Mark Sanford (R-SC) joined Texas' Rick Perry, Mississippi's Haley Barbour and Louisiana's Bobby Jindal in announcing they would reject some of the federal stimulus funds allocated to their states. But as the steady one-way flow of tax dollars and earmarks spreading the wealth from Washington to their states shows, de facto red state socialism is alive and well.

As a 2007 analysis (above) of federal spending per tax dollar received by state shows, the reddest states generally reaped the most green.

Ed Pastor: What are you calling “pork”?

AzCentral:
Rep. Ed Pastor has an ear for earmarks and no qualms about directing federal cash to local projects that critics might characterize as pork.
The veteran Arizona Democrat’s accommodating attitude toward spending puts him at odds with Republican Capitol Hill colleagues such as Sen. John McCain and Rep. Jeff Flake.
But observers say it also helps make [...]
