Where retired Corporation Commissioners go

Term limits can be a terrible thing, ending political careers -- perhaps prematurely.
Consider the case of former Arizona Corporation Commissioners Bill Mundell and Jeff Hatch-Miller. Both men, former lawmakers, found their way on to the Corp Comm in their post-legislative life.
Term limits barred them from continued regulation of state utilities and securities, so they were cast adrift -- until the Good Ship Brewer scooped them up.
Mundell (above right) is Brewer's pick to be the state's new Registrar of Contractors. And Hatch-Miller has been tapped to run the state Lottery.
Both men won easy approval Tuesday from the Senate Commerce and ...

Bitter Smith to decide soon

Susan Bitter Smith will have a decision within a week to 10 days, said exploratory committee spokesman Brian Hummell.

"It's nice to know people are interested," said Hummell, while explaining that despite an invitation, Smith couldn't attend last night's event. "We can't participate in any policy discussions as an exploratory committee."

Hummell was sure to point out that while a decision is expected by mid-April, there may not be an announcement immediately.

Debating what IL-14 means for AZ-3

Democrat Bill Foster’s Saturday victory in IL-14 is not necessarily a reason for optimism for those Democrats who are gunning for Republican John Shadegg’s Third District seat, Republican Corporation Commissioner Jeff Hatch-Miller said today.

Arizona Corporation Commissioner Jeff Hatch-Miller has dropped out of the primary race for the 5th Congressional District.

As East Valley Tribune's Paul Giblin reports:

"He made the decision after losing two key campaign staff members just as he was preparing to ramp up the campaign. His campaign coordinator died unexpectedly Friday, a day after his speech writer told him she had to cut back her work because of other commitments.

Hatch-Miller: fundraising on target

State Commissioner Jeff Hatch-Miller, one of the Republicans running for the U.S. Congress in District 5, says that his fundraising is progressing well.

“We’re on target with our fundraising,” he said. “We’re quite pleased with our response.”

Hatch-Miller joined the race in January, meaning that unlike his rival candidates he didn’t have to disclose his fundraising with the FEC in January.

Schweikert stays focused on fundraising

As far as congressional candidates go, David Schweikert, one of the Republicans running for the District 5 seat currently held by Democrat Harry Mitchell, is something of a rare bird: he enjoys fundraising.

“I love getting on the phone with people,” he says.

His efforts seem to be paying off. Schweikert’s campaign says that it has taken in more than $500,000 and has between $430,000 and $440,000 on hand. 600 individuals have donated and the campaign says that it has attracted a broad base of support.

In CD5, Knaperek runs on conservative credentials

The campaign for Laura Knaperek, one of the Republicans running in Congressional District 5, is convinced that Democratic incumbent Harry Mitchell is vulnerable.

“This is a fundamentally conservative district,” says Lauren Barnett, Knaparek’s campaign manager.

Barnett might very well have a point. The district, which spans the cities of Tempe and Scottsdale and includes parts of Maricopa County, gave President Bush 54% of its votes in 2000 and 2004, according to the nonpartisan Almanac of American Politics.
