Terry Goddard goes exploring, may attract a crowd

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, to no one's great surprise, will be filing an "exploratory committee" for governor in June. How do I know? I was contacted and asked to add my name to a list of endorsers.

Expect an announcement when the exploratory committee is filed.

Recent rumor has it that former Tempe Mayor Neil Giuliano is considering entering the Democratic primary for governor.

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon is perpetually rumored to be interested in entering the Democratic primary for governor.

Former Arizona Democratic Party Chairman and 2006 U.S. Senate candidate Jim Pederson is still exploring his options.

Rep. David Bradley (LD 28) is exploring his options as well. If he decides to run, it has been reported that he would resign his House seat sometime this summer to concentrate on his campaign.

Jim Pederson tests the waters for governor race

Jim Pederson, former Arizona Democratic Party chairman and a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2006, has been "exploring" running for governor.

Pederson tests the waters with this recent guest opinion in the East Valley Tribune Pursue better choices for state budget

By Jim Pederson, Commentary – 4.18.09

I cannot stand quietly by and only watch what is happening to Arizona. It is time to speak out.

Barely three years ago, we were talking about Arizona’s future, its spectacular growth potential and how we would best manage and leverage that growth. We were talking about transportation, better jobs and more jobs in important growth sectors: high-tech, bio-tech, innovation, science and sustainability.

SWAG Re: 2010 Arizona Democratic Primaries

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Tucson Weekly has its "Scramble Watch" to engage in wild political speculation. Here we just call it SWAG - "silly wild ass guesses" (with a measure of fact and solid rumors). Today's focus is on the potential and rumored Democratic candidates.

For those of you who would like to play along at home, here is a link to the Arizona Secretary of State's Campaign Finance - Committee Search page. For a general search, go to "committee search - by type" and use the "select" cursor to select "candidate" and "2010." When the page comes up, scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to find the most recent entry, and work upwards.

A Good Sign

In all the recriminations among party activists about the decision to hire a “head hunter” to help out with the search for an executive director, folks have missed out on a small but important sign for the next two years of the party.

In my post about the hiring of the firm, I think I left the impression that Jim Pederson pushed for this move as a way to keep Terry Goddard from having total control of the party. That is not entirely the case. Both Goddard and Pederson supported this move. I think that’s a good sign for the way they will be running their probable race against each other next year.

Okay, Man, I Get the Point, Jim Pederson Has Him Some Money

Somebody keeps commenting under the name “Jim Pederson.” I’ve deleted these comments, but the person posting them has put up new ones.

These comments are obviously a joke, but given how many times I’ve written posts that I thought were obviously satire that were taken seriously (and how many people continue to take Republitard’s comments at face value), I have taken the posts down to eliminate any possibility of confusion. As silly as it sounds, these posts get left up and the next thing you know, somebody is quoting the real Jim Pederson as actually writing them. Sounds dumb, but given the sort of e-mails I’ve gotten, it is a possibility. Also, the fact that this person continues to post even after I deleted them tells me that his aim isn’t entirely humorous.

When You Are In a Deep Hole, Keep Hiring Consultants

I recieved a couple of e-mails this weekend from people preturbed that the state party is hiring a head hunter to search for the next executive director. I share a great deal of the concerns of the people that wrote me, but I did a little poking around and found out a little about what motivated the decision.

First off, the “rollout” of this doesn’t seem to be handled well. Given what has gone on over the last couple of weeks, and the complaints of lack of communication and inclusion for the last few years, it is understandable that many party officers would feel like this decision was yet another one sprung on them.

An Indication?

The buzz among Phoenix area politicos the last 36 hours has been about the fact that Greg Stanton is resigning his Phoenix city council seat to work in the Attorney General’s office.

It is a bit unusual for someone to resign a political office unless they are getting a higher profile elected or appointive office. Stanton was on track to run for mayor when Phil Gordon is done with his current term (unless, as is the buzz among his detractors, he pulls a Michael Bloomberg).

Here is why this is interesting for those of us who aren’t from Phoenix: Stanton is giving up a seat he could easily be re-elected to, and is on a fairly sure path to a higher office, to work for a guy that is termed out at the end of next year.

AZ DNC delegates see Napolitano speech as sign of her growing prominence

DENVER -- There was little doubt Arizona's delegates to the Democratic National Convention would profess enthusiasm for Gov. Janet Napolitano's prime time speech before in front of the convention, and, as expected, the accolades poured in from Arizonans on the convention floor.
