Arizona loses another newspaper: East Valley Tribune

Posted by azBlueMeanie:

Earlier this year, Arizona suffered the loss of its oldest continuously published newspaper, the Tucson Citizen. Now Arizona will suffer the loss of the award winning East Valley Tribune. East Valley Tribune to shut down Dec. 31:

The Tribune Newspapers will cease operations on Dec. 31, parent company Freedom Communications said Monday.

Freedom officials made the announcement to Tribune employees Monday morning, citing the economic recession and changes in the newspaper industry that have caused many publications to close and others to file for bankruptcy protection.

Freedom, which itself is operating under Chapter 11 reorganization, had been attempting to sell the Tribune, but no acceptable offers have come forward, said interim Chief Executive Burl Osborne.

Here's a photo of Vic Williams (R-LD26) hanging around with a few of his closest friends: Russell Pearce, J.D. Hayworth and Sheriff Joe Arpaio (Present but out of the shot, Andrew Thomas). That's Vic looking stern and resolute behind the big three.

The issue is immigration. With those folks sharing the microphone, you know the tone is harsh.

How harsh? The Republic, not known as a Republican-bashing publication or a bastion of liberalism, had this to say under the headline, "Pearce and crew fill leadership vacuum with bunk."

Because Congress has abdicated its responsibility to resolve illegal immigration, powers have stepped into their leadership vacuum.

Sheriff accuses feds of sneaking into press conference

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is accusing U.S. Department of Justice officials of trying to sneak into a news conference by posing as reporters. His lawyer says he will file a complaint.
The Department of Justice admits investigators from the civil rights division attended the news conference, but says the investigators identified themselves as Justice Department officials and then left when told the press conference was closed to the public.
The dispute took place on Friday, when Arpaio held a 5 p.m. press conference at the Sheriff's Office substation on Bell Road near Dysart Road in Surprise to talk about his latest ...

It's Never Too Early...

It’s been less than 11 month since he was elected to his fifth-consecutive term in office, but Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is already soliciting more funds for another campaign.
In a letter Arpaio sent to supporters last week, the sheriff painstakingly lays out the vast left-wing conspiracy working against him - name dropping Rev. Al Sharpton, President Barack Obama, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and ACORN along with a few media outlets - and says he’s in need of financial support to fight these forces.
To reiterate the threat Sharpton poses (he’s visited Phoenix twice this year ...

Want proof? Documents back up RICO story

In the spirit of digital journalism …

Sheriff Joe Arpaio responds to Sunday’s Republic story on the use of RICO funds to lease expensive cars for he and his top staff with a post from the “Sheriff Fights Back” blog, a space on the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Web site where Arpaio regularly responds to news accounts with “The Truth Behind the Headlines.”
The post contends that information in the story on the leasing company that provides the cars, on Chief Deputy David Henderschott's first-class airfare to Honduras and on the budget is incorrect.
Documents on which the story was based — ...

While You're At It...

The Sheriff's Office took advantage of the wave of bad news surrounding a national activist group by subpoenaing records on Thursday that Joe Arpaio believes will support his notion of a vast left-wing conspiracy operating against him.
Arpaio's attorney issued a subpoena for records from the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now under the theory that local ACORN representatives were somehow involved in a lawsuit making its way through federal court alleging that Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies racially profiled Hispanic residents.
The lawsuit was filed in December 2007 and now involves a legal resident and four U.S. citizens who all ...

Award to Trib reporters for Tax Credit/STO stories

by David Safier
Ryan Gabrielson and Michelle Reese have received much deserved praise for their series in the East Valley Tribune, Rigged Privilege, about the misuse of tuition tax credits and improper behavior by the STOs that manage and disburse the funds. Now they've received an award and a little bit of extra cash for their efforts.

The Sidney Hillman Foundation have given the two reporters its Sidney Award for Social Justice Journalism. The award comes with $500.

This isn't the first such award for Gabrielson. He was awarded a Pulitzer along with Paul Giblin for their five-part investigative series about Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Ironically, Giblin was downsized out of his Trib job because of budget cuts and is now on the staff of the

Top this one. I dare you. From the Business Journal.

State Sen. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, said he would be interested in running for Maricopa County Sheriff if Joe Arpaio opts to run for governor next year.
