Democrats prepared to enforce party discipline and unity in the Senate

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

On September 30, 2009 I posted this piece of advice for Democrats Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat: the public option is alive and well:

Let's be clear. The 60 votes senators incessantly talk about is not required to pass a bill. It is a vote for cloture to close debate and to move on to voting for a bill. Democrats have 58 senators and two independents who caucus with the Democrats. They ostensibly have 60 votes for such procedural matters as cloture votes. This is a question of party discipline and unity.

The only way opponents of health care reform with a strong public option can prevent enactment of such a bill is if one or more Democrats side with the Republican obstructionists and against their party leadership on a procedural vote for cloture.

Arizona's twin embarrassments: economic ignoramuses

Posted by :

Arizona's twin embarrassments, Senators Jon Kyl and John McCain, just can't stop lying about Arizona's tax burden and the federal stimulus brouhaha they started.

John McCain was on CNN Wednesday to continue his whining about how the big bad Obama administration was unfairly picking on him and Senator Kyl for their belligerent remarks about the federal stimulus funds earmarked for Arizona. John McCain: The Stimulus is a Failure, But Don't Dare Ask Arizona to Give Any of the Money Back | Video Cafe:

SEN. JOHN MCCAIN (R), ARIZONA: Thank you, Kiran.

CHETRY: Well, you know, your fellow senator, Arizona's Jon Kyl, has said that the stimulus should be canceled.

What a Dick! Cheney lies to defend his policies of torture

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

It is lucky for Dick Cheney that George Washington is not alive today. Ol' George would have kicked Cheney's ass for spitting upon America's time-honored values, including George Washington's policy that Americans do not torture.

Dr. Strangelove, er, Dick Cheney was full-blown delusional while delivering his speech today to the far-right zealots at the American Enterpise Institute (AEI). His speech was intended to be a defense of the Bush-Cheney record and his legacy.

Cheney's speech was so chock full of factual inaccuracies, misrepresentations, half-truths and lies that it may take fact checkers several days to identify them all. That is, if the media villagers even bother to fact check this web of deceit.

Snarlin' Arlen Specter: the GOP abandoned me, so I'm joining the Democratic Party

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The big news today for the Beltway bloviators and media villagers is that Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) announced that the Republican Party has abandoned moderate Republicans like him for the Club for Growth (Grover Norquist) conservatives. "There ought to be a rebellion, an uprising" against these Club for Growth conservatives by Republicans, said Specter. He instead announced that he is joining the Democratic Party.

The chattering class immediately started hyperventilating about how this will give the Democrats a 60 vote filibuster-proof majority in the Senate once Al Franken dispatches sore loser Norm Coleman in the Minnesota Supreme Court. This is why the "conventional wisdom" of the Beltway media villagers is anything but.

Paging Mr. Biden: Gov. Brewer to talk stimulus with VP

Gov. Jan Brewer will be on a conference call Tuesday morning with Vice President Joe Biden as he takes questions from a handful of governors about federal stimulus dollars.
Nearly $800 billion in federal funding is at stake, of which Arizona expects to receive about $4.2 billion. But much of the funding remains mired in confusion, so Biden is taking questions from governors a few at a time. Brewer will share the conference call with governors from Nevada, Montana, Tennessee and Delaware.
Brewer's message to Biden: "We're going to make some constructive criticism and we'll also express our gratitude," said gubernatorial spokesman ...

White House: Stapley not on task force

Indicted Maricopa County Supervisor Don Stapley was not appointed to a special task force on the implementation of the federal economic recovery plan, despite a claim to that effect made by his lawyers in a court motion, a White House spokeswoman said Wednesday.

White House taps Stapley for stimulus work

Stapley's attorney, Paul Charlton, said there was a mix-up in terminology and acknowledged the supervisor has not been appointed to a task force by Vice President Joe Biden, as was claimed in a motion filed Tuesday.

However, Stapley was asked to participate in a meeting next week in Washington, D.C., to discuss the implementation of the economic recovery plan signed last month by President Barack Obama, Charlton said.
