Sen. John McCain Threatens Net Neutrality

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

"Net Neutrality" or "Network Neutrality" is a principle for a broadband Internet network that is free of restrictions on content, sites, or platforms, on the kinds of equipment that may be attached, and on the modes of communication allowed, as well as one where communication is not unreasonably degraded by other communication streams. Since the early 2000s advocates of net neutrality and associated rules have raised concerns about the ability of broadband providers to use their last mile infrastructure to block Internet applications and content (e.g. websites, services, protocols), particularly those of their competitors.

Neutrality proponents claim that telecom companies seek to impose a tiered service model in order to control the pipeline and thereby remove competition, create artificial scarcity, and oblige subscribers to buy their otherwise uncompetitive services.

The Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes bill passed, sent to President Obama

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Senate voted Thursday to extend new federal protections to people who are victims of violent crime because of their sex or sexual orientation, bringing the measure close to reality after years of fierce debate by a vote of 68-29. Senate Approves Broadened Hate-Crimes Measure

Sen. Jon Kyl voted no, Sen. John McCain voted yes.

The measure, attached to an essential military-spending bill, broadens the definition of federal hate crimes to include those committed because of a victim’s gender or gender identity, or sexual orientation. It gives victims the same federal safeguards already afforded to people who are victims of violent crimes because of their race, color, religion or national origin.

Update: Rape-Nuts

The Rachel Maddow Show reported Wednesday evening that the Republicans who voted against the Al Franken Amendment to the defense appropriations bill are taking heated criticism from the editors of their Red State newspapers back home. 'The Rachel Maddow Show' for Wednesday, October 21:

MADDOW: Thirty Republican senators - 30 of the 40 total Republican senators we have now cast a vote recently that has even the conservative op-ed pages of the senator's local hometown papers burning bright with outrage.

It may be the sleeper political issue of the year, the vote that will launch 1,000 campaign ads, if nothing else.

Arizona may be the only state in the nation where mothers can no longer tell their children that some day they can grow up and be President of the United States.

What is Paul Beddard, the Washington Whispers blogger at the conservative U.S. News & World Report smoking? 5 Conservatives to Watch for 2012 Presidential Race:

Key conservatives tell Whispers that there are five lawmakers poised to lead the conservative populists, perhaps all the way to the 2012 or 2016 presidential campaigns. One is in the Senate: Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl, the GOP whip.

It's official: Rodney Glassman is "exploring" running for John McCain's U.S. Senate seat

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

I received an e-mail today from Tucson City Councilman Rodney Glassman announcing the formation of the "Rodney Glassman U.S. Senate Exploratory Committee." "Through this committee, we intend to raise funds in order to 'test the waters' for the 2010 U.S. Senate race."

You can check out Glassman's exploratory committee web site at www.rodneyglassman.com. In case you are wondering, an exploratory committee means that Glassman does not have to resign to run under Arizona law, not that anyone is enforcing the law any longer.

It's curious timing. Could it be because the right-wing blog Gila Courier discovered his web site yesterday?

Ad: Local doctors support health care reform

by David Safier

More than 40 doctors signed an ad that appeared in this morning's Star supporting health care reform. Here is a copy of the complete ad.

This is how it begins:

One in 5 Tucsonans and one in 4 Phoenicians have no healthcare insurance. That is 108,000 and 381,000 people left vulnerable to catastrophe, in just our two largest cities. Our country spends twice as much as other nations that cover all their citizens and yet we leave millions without coverage.

Those with private healthcare insurance find that when a serious health event occurs, coverage is far from complete. The leading cause of bankruptcy is due to medical expenses, and 3/4 of these bankruptcies occurred with citizens who had insurance.

The Phoenix Business Journal reports that J.D. Hayworth considers Senate run:

Conservative radio commentator and former Scottsdale congressman J.D. Hayworth is considering a run against U.S. Sen. John McCain in next year’s Republican primary.

A source in Arizona who asked not to be identified said Hayworth is pondering the move.

J.D. regularly uses his afternoon radio talk show on KFYI-AM 550 to bash John McCain and threaten to run against him in the GOP primary. This is news how?

The Neocon Washington Post's Chris Cilizza also reported the speculation in his column The Fix:

Cindy McCain: compassionate (about migraines) conservative

by David Safier
How typically conservative is this?

Cindy McCain, wife of U.S. Senator John McCain, today announced she would work to raise awareness of migraine among the public and health professionals and pledged to take her message to leaders in Washington to increase funding for research into migraines, a condition that affects some 36 million Americans.

How is that typically conservative, you might ask? Here's the answer.

Mrs. McCain recently revealed publicly that she has suffered severe migraine attacks for the last 15 years.

Bill Clinton famously said, "I feel your pain." It's a typically bleeding-heart-liberal statement. Cindy just said, "I feel my own pain, so I want all of you to spend time and government money to make my pain go away.
