Shaun McClusky pulls a Dunbar, campaign circles the drain

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Shaun McClusky is a political neophyte. Hell, he admits that he wasn't politically active and didn't even bother to vote in city elections before he was recruited by the GOP to run for city council. So I know the latest actions are being directed by the GOP "brain trust" of Bill Arnold, Bruce Ash and Jim Click. This has their brand of Roger Ailes/Lee Atwater/Karl Rove "politics of personal destruction" fingerprints all over it. The kid doesn't like it.

I received a large glossy flier from the McClusky campaign with big, bold headlines screaming that money destined for the Tucson Police Department has "disappeared" and is "missing," and that Richard Fimbres won't say what happened to it.

Tea Party Temper-Tantrum

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Rhonda Bodfield of the Arizona Daily Star has a report today about the faux outrage coming from the Tucson Tea Party over being "slandered" by the use of the term "teabagger." Potential sexual slur in release raises Tea Partiers' ire; Uhlich apologizes This is known as manufacturing a story from nothing.

Let me help you out with a little research you obviously did not do, Rhonda. It was the Tea Party Patriots and their free advertising promotions at Faux News who first used the term "teabaggers" as you can see from this report below from the Rachel Maddow Show from this past April.

Sen. Jesse Helms alive and well in Tucson?

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

I thought Sen. Jesse Helms, the unreconstructed Southern ultra-conservative culture warrior and unapologetic redneck racist from North Carolina, died in 2003? Apparently his spirit is alive and well in Tucson.

"Senator No" was a culture warrior who excelled at wedge issue politics. One of Helm's favorite targets was federal funding for the National Endowment for the Arts.

I read in today's Arizona Daily Star that Tucson's Museum of Contemporary Art is defending itself in a preemptive press release against an attack ad apparently set to run soon against council members Nina Trasoff and Karin Uhlich. The attack ad focuses on an art exhibit that ran three years ago that allegedly featured "phallic imagery that some might consider pornographic.

Farley Report, Oct 6, 2009

Rep. Farley (LD28) ponders the state of the state, and it ain't great:
Howdy,  Friends O'Farley...

Here we are in October, and our deficit is now $1.5 billion and growing.

Constitutionally, the Legislature is supposed to have delivered a balanced budget on June 30, but no one seems to want to enforce that clause. Perhaps this could finally be a good use for Sheriff Joe?

Dressing the Governor and the Legislative majority in pink stripes and locking them into Tent City could finally force an agreement of some kind. Not that I want to spend too much time thinking of the images that go with that scenario.

Fact Checking GOP Tucson City Council Candidates' Walk Pieces

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

A Republican campaign worker dropped off walk pieces for the GOP Tucson Council Council candidates at my door today. (I understand that Republicans have $1 million to drop on this city council race and have the money to piss away on Democratic voters). Well, I'll make you pay for littering my doorstep with your trash.

Time for a Fact Check, since the practically useless Arizona Daily Starsure as hell won't do it. Too much advertising money is being spent by GOP money-man Jim Click lately on full page color ads. If you believe advertising revenue does not affect news content, I've got some ocean-front property in Arizona I'd like to sell you.

GOP Tucson City Council candidates - not ready for prime time

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

There's a city council election in Tucson? You'd never know this if you only read the Arizona Daily Star.

Since the demise of the Tucson Citizen earlier this year, the only newspaper that delivers quality political reporting is the Tucson Weekly - kudos to Jim Nintzel.

In this week's edition of the Tucson Weekly, Jim Nintzel reports on the Cost of Crime, "City Council candidates debate the Public Safety First Initiative" (excerpts):

Councilwoman Karin Uhlich, the incumbent Democrat in Ward 3, says she's not taking a stand on Prop 200.

"I think it's more persuasive for me to provide good information as an individual than to try to persuade people and say, 'This is where I'm headed on this one,'" says Uhlich.

New media update

Ben welcoming a U.S. Navy officer to Tucson

Ben Buehler-Garica is on Facebook. Ben is running to represent Ward 3 on the Tucson City Council. From what we are hearing, Ben has reached 20% of his fundraising goal. The incumbent, Karin Uhlich, has raised over $40,000 but had already spent about $25,000, $4,500 of it on a web site. Way to go Karin. If she runs her campaign like Rio Nuevo spends money the election could actually be competitive.

Outside the city, it looks like LD 25 Republicans are getting organized. District 25 sprawls over several counties and is hard to organize because of geography.
