Let's Begin the Debate on The Merits of This Proposal: Universal Voter Registration

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Voting is often referred to in terms of the "right to vote." Most Americans believe they have a "right to vote" guaranteed to them by the U.S. Constitution. They are sadly mistaken. The Constitution only prohibits certain discriminatory acts in voting under the 15th, 19th and 26th Amendments respectively.

The U.S. Supreme Court in Bush v. Gore constantly reminded the lawyers in that case that there is no explicit or fundamental right to suffrage in the Constitution - "the individual citizen has no federal constitutional right to vote for electors for the President of the United States." (Bush v. Gore, 531 U.

Bennett: Don't worry, it's doubtful the entire government will shut down

The state-budget impasse continues, but Secretary of State Ken Bennett says fear not. Even if legislators and Gov. Jan Brewer haven't reached a deal by June 30, the end of the fiscal year, Bennett said Arizonans probably aren't looking at a total state shutdown."It's just unnecessary," Bennett said. "There's no need to shut down government."Some of my colleagues at The Republic wrote astutely Wednesday about the implications of a state shutdown. In the event that no deal is reached by the end of the month, he said, legislators could pass a series of continuing resolutions to maintain government on a month-by-month basis. ...

SWAG Re: 2010 Arizona Democratic Primaries

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Tucson Weekly has its "Scramble Watch" to engage in wild political speculation. Here we just call it SWAG - "silly wild ass guesses" (with a measure of fact and solid rumors). Today's focus is on the potential and rumored Democratic candidates.

For those of you who would like to play along at home, here is a link to the Arizona Secretary of State's Campaign Finance - Committee Search page. For a general search, go to "committee search - by type" and use the "select" cursor to select "candidate" and "2010." When the page comes up, scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to find the most recent entry, and work upwards.

Court nixes state's candidate restrictions

Arizona has to allow residents of other states to circulate petitions to put independent presidential contenders on the ballot, the U.S. Supreme Court has concluded.

Without comment, the justices on Monday upheld a decision by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals which concluded the restriction places a “severe burden” on presidential contenders who are not Arizona residents and do not have the benefit of being nominated by one of the major political parties. The appellate judges said Arizona’s law placed an undue burden on the rights of presidential candidates who do not live in Arizona as well as their out-of-state supporters.

Monday’s decision actually is a double defeat for Arizona.

So much for search-engine optimization ...

So what happens when you "google" Gov. Jan Brewer?
Not what you might think.
Instead of the governor's homepage, the top two results direct users to Secretary of State Ken Bennett - one to his homepage and the other to his bio. The next results? A story from azcentral.com (shameless plug) ... then you get a a few other stories and, of course, her Wikipedia entry.
Her official homepage comes up sixth. (By the way, similar searches for Brewer and Arizona come up with the same responses.)
She's been governor for about five weeks now. And yes, her transition team is still around. But ...

Campaign Contribution Limit Increased

Candidates in the 2009-10 election cycle will benefit from a 4.2 increase in the campaign contribution limits, Secretary of State Ken Bennett said Tuesday in a release. State law allows the limits to be adjusted for inflation every two years.
You may now give $410 to a local or legislative candidate, up from $390 in 2008. The total amount an individual may give to candidates and committees is $5,850, up from $5,610.
Meanwhile, candidates who run with public financing will benefit from substantially increased funding over the 2006 cycle, thanks to 2007 legislation that changed the funding formulas.
Gubernatorial candidates will get $707,447 ...

Arizona Voter Registrations Pass 3 Million Mark; Democrats Surge in Maricopa County

For the first time, Arizona has three million registered voters, according to new figures released today. Figures also show the Democratic Party increasing its share of voters at the expense of Republicans.
Arizona now boasts 3,070,654 voters, Secretary of State Ken Bennett said in his first official press release. The state now has 1,140,609 registered Republicans and 1,047,126 Democrats. The number of total voters has increased by 83,203 since the November election.
"This increase in voter registration reflects the efforts taken by the county recorders, the political parties, and the Secretary of State's office to educate and register citizens to vote," Bennett ...

Hail to the chief

Another week, another inauguration. Really, it's all getting to be too much.
Ken Bennett was sworn in Monday as Secretary of State in a half-hour ceremony in the old Capitol. Chief Justice Ruth McGregor did the honors, making her third trip in as many weeks to the Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony.
(Week One: Swear in new lawmakers. Week Two: Swear in Jan Brewer as governor. Week Three: Bennett. What's up for next week? Oh yeah, there's going to be a new lawmaker from District 13. See item below.)
After the ceremony, there was the reception, a nice little cookies-punch-and -ice-cream affair in ...
