Source: Knaperek tops list for AZ Sec. of State

According to a state Republican insider familiar with the process, former state Rep. Laura Knaperek is one of the top contenders to take over the Arizona Secretary of State's office if current SoS Jan Brewer assumes the governorship.

"My understanding is that Laura is on the top of Jan Brewer's list," said the source, who spoke with PolitickerAZ.com on condition of anonymity.

Schweikert tops Bitter Smith in AZ-5 primary

David Schweikert will win the 5th Congressional District Republican primary, PolitickerAZ.com projects.

With 97.6 percent of precincts reporting, Schweikert tops the six-person field with just under 30 percent of the vote. Susan Bitter Smith, who has kept pace with him throughout the night, currently has 28 percent of the vote, but it will not be enough to overcome Schweikert's lead.

Knaperek calls for 50% domestic energy production

Laura Knaperek, who is running in a field of six contenders for the Republican nomination in the 5th Congressional District, has released a white paper detailing her views on energy. In what she terms the "50% Doctrine," Knaperek is calling for the United States to produce 50 percent of its own energy by 2028, a 15 percent increase, she said, over today's level.

Mitchell camp says they're used to getting tracked

The re-election campaign of U.S. Rep. Harry Mitchell says they've had trackers at their offices and at events, both in 2006 and this year. Seth Scott, Mitchell's campaign manager, additionally said the campaign's sentiments regarding tracking in the 5th Congressional District race have been mischaracterized, and that they are simply used to tracking, not practicioners of it.
