Congress to probe alleged Arpaio abuses

A U.S. House committee chairman said Wednesday he’ll hold a hearing next month on alleged civil rights abuses by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers said at a news conference that he will hold a hearing in late April examining the conduct of Arpaio, who has been conducting sweeps in Hispanic neighborhoods in the Valley that have resulted in the arrests of illegal immigrants.

Arpaio target of Justice Department probe

Conyers, D-Mich., said the hearing will also examine other examples from around the country of alleged abuses of a program that allows local police departments to enforce federal immigration laws.

“We’re not trying to persecute or take advantage of anybody,” Conyers said.

D13 replacement to be announced Jan. 21.

 
                                        Don't hold your breath for the announcement of Steve Gallardo's District 13 replacement, cause it's not coming any time soon.

We were told a recommendation could've come down on Friday, but today, Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox told the Insider it's looking more like later this month.
The four-member citizens committee charged with coming up with three potential replacements interviewed one candidate today, but isn't expected to make their recommendations to the Board of Supervisors until Jan. 21. The board is expected to approve its pick on Jan. 26.

Gallardo's replacement could be named Friday

 

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday morning put together a citizens committee to help pick a replacement for Rep. Steve Gallardo, D, who bolted from the Legislature and District 13.
The board appointed to the committee Rep. Martha Garcia, D, of District 13, Mark Martinez, Cartwright Elementary School District Superintendent, John Loredo, former state lawmaker, and Deborah Gomez, vice chair of District 13’s Democratic precinct committee.
The four-member committee will come up with three potential Gallardo replacements, prioritize their picks and forward them to the Board of Supervisors, said County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox, whose district includes D13.

Hermes has his sights set on the Maricopa Board of Supervisors

Ed Hermes is currently the Director of External Affairs for the Arizona Department of Agriculture - but if he has his way, he'll be sitting on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors this time next year.
