Republican Born Again Deficit Virgins

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

John Perr is one of the better economics bloggers. He posted this piece at crooksandliars.com Born Again Deficit Virgins:

Everything you need to know about the descent of the conservative movement into a hypocritical caricature is illustrated by two of its proudest constituencies: Republican deficit hawks and so-called "born again virgins." Having already violated the moral strictures they claim to hold dearest, each now asks the American people to join them in pretending their sin never happened. But unlike a generation of Republican leaders who built a mountain of national debt for the United States, the secondary virgins only screwed themselves.

New study says second round of stimulus aid to the states will be necessary

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Earlier this year, the Accidental Governor and several Republican state legislators toyed with the idea of rejecting federal stimulus aid to the state. It was purely ideological grandstanding. Wiser heads prevailed and Arizona accepted the federal stimulus aid. The current budget deficit would have been far worse without the federal stimulus aid.

A new study says that a second round of federal stimulus aid is going to be required to rescue state governments from budget deficits for several years to come, and to prevent a "double-dip" recession. Obama warns of a 'double dip' recession (Obama said it's important to recognize that if the nation keeps adding to deficit spending through tax cuts or more stimulus spending, at some point people could lose confidence in the U.

ADL Special Reports: Rage Grows in America: Anti‑Government Conspiracies

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

The Anti-Defamation League has released the following ADL Special Reports: Rage Grows in America: Anti-Government Conspiracies

Introduction: A Year of Growing Animosity

Since the election of Barack Obama as president, a current of anti-government hostility has swept across the United States, creating a climate of fervor and activism with manifestations ranging from incivility in public forums to acts of intimidation and violence.

What characterizes this anti-government hostility is a shared belief that Obama and his administration actually pose a threat to the future of the United States. Some accuse Obama of plotting to bring socialism to the United States, while others claim he will bring about Nazism or fascism.

Conservatives' Crisis of Faith in the Constitution

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Conservatives would have you believe that they are the defenders of the Constitution. For many, this is bullshit.

In the days immediately following 9/11, many conservatives were quick to unquestioningly accept Dick Cheney's dark vision of the imperial presidency and the "unitary executive" theory under which neither coequal branch of the government had the power to check the executive branch during times of war. A cowardly Congress quickly abdicated its constitutional prerogatives and duties over war and spending to the president. Article III federal courts suddenly became deferential to overly broad presidential claims of national security and state secrets (with a few notable exceptions for which these judges were savaged by the conservative media).

10 years after the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Josh Kalven posts this timely piece as Congress considers new regulations for Wall Street -- let's begin with the repeal of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Financial Services Modernization Act and return to the Glass-Steagall Act. (I have previously discussed this topic.) Ten Years After The Repeal Of Glass-Steagall:

This weeks mark ten years since the enactment of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Financial Services Modernization Act. This piece of legislation repealed a Depression-era law known as Glass-Steagall, which segregated commercial and investment banks. By breaking down that wall, huge financial institutions were able to invest heavily in exotic "derivatives" that put the whole financial system -- not just their investors -- in peril.

What fun! Tea Partiers Eat Their Own In Bitter Internal Feud

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

"I am not a member of any organized party — I am a Democrat." -- Will Rogers

Democrats have been at this now since the days of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson. It takes a lot of practice to be able to fight with one another and to hold the party together.

You can't just throw together a bunch of angry people and expect to make a political movement or a political party out of them overnight. This isn't a job for the inexperienced or political novice. And that is what the upstart Tea Party conservatives are finding out.

The AMA takes some "liberal," er, centrist positions

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

First, the American Medical Association (AMA), long the obstacle to health care reform for more than five decades, announced its support for the House Democrats health care reform bill. Now comes these equally eye opening new positions.

On Monday, the American Medical Association (AMA), in partnership with Servicemembers United, the nation's largest organization of gay and lesbian troops and veterans and their allies, passed a resolution calling for full repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law. With overwhelming support from its membership and virtually no opposition, even from the uniformed services representatives in attendance, the call for full repeal became official AMA policy upon passage of the resolution.

Trollin' for Teabaggers

Gubernatorial aspirants Dean Martin, currently Arizona State Treasurer, and Vernon Parker, currently mayor of Paradise Valley, showed up to speak at a teabagger rally today  at the state Capitol this afternoon.  So did Tom Horne who is currently Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction and is planning to run for State Attorney General.  State Rep. Debbie Lesko (LD-9) also spoke.  It's not clear what Lil Debbie is running for, but she's trollin' for teabaggers, so she must be up to something.

The crowd was pretty sparse, not more than 150 people at the most and that includes at least four of us who were just there to see just how far Republican candidates would go to pander to the teabagger crowd.

President Obama made brief remarks to reporters in the White House Briefing Room, following the AARP and AMA's endorsements of the health care reform bill. Obama: AARP's Support On Health Care Is 'No Small Endorsement':

Obama first thanked the AARP, whose support he called "no small endorsement." He continued: "They are endorsing this bill because they know it will strengthen Medicare, not jeopardize it. They know it will protect the benefits our seniors receive, not cut them."

Obama went on to address the AMA's support:

The same is true for the doctors and medical professionals who are supporting this bill today.
