Pederson not running for governor in 2010

Developer and Democratic financier Jim Pederson will not run for governor in 2010.
Pederson, 66, had been weighing his potential candidacy, but confirmed in a conversation with The Arizona Republic this afternoon that he will stay out of the race for the state's top elected office. Pederson said he made the decision within the last 24 hours, and cited "a combination of factors" – most notably the business stresses caused by the state's waning real estate market and his desire to spend more time with his family, including his grandchildren.
"I just determined over the last couple days it's not the right time for ...

A Good Sign

In all the recriminations among party activists about the decision to hire a “head hunter” to help out with the search for an executive director, folks have missed out on a small but important sign for the next two years of the party.

In my post about the hiring of the firm, I think I left the impression that Jim Pederson pushed for this move as a way to keep Terry Goddard from having total control of the party. That is not entirely the case. Both Goddard and Pederson supported this move. I think that’s a good sign for the way they will be running their probable race against each other next year.

An Indication?

The buzz among Phoenix area politicos the last 36 hours has been about the fact that Greg Stanton is resigning his Phoenix city council seat to work in the Attorney General’s office.

It is a bit unusual for someone to resign a political office unless they are getting a higher profile elected or appointive office. Stanton was on track to run for mayor when Phil Gordon is done with his current term (unless, as is the buzz among his detractors, he pulls a Michael Bloomberg).

Here is why this is interesting for those of us who aren’t from Phoenix: Stanton is giving up a seat he could easily be re-elected to, and is on a fairly sure path to a higher office, to work for a guy that is termed out at the end of next year.
