Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Now that local elections are all but over for the counting in Tucson (and a possible recount in Ward 3), it's time once again to update the early filers with the Arizona Secretary of State for 2010. You can play along at home at http://www.azsos.gov/cfs/CommitteeSearch.aspx

The big news today: Terry Goddard, the state's highest-elected Democrat, filed paperwork Friday morning announcing that he is exploring a run for governor next year. Political Insider Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and former Arizona Democratic Party Chairman and 2006 U.S. Senate candidate Jim Pederson previously announced that they would not run. Former Tempe Mayor Neil Giuliano has also decided not to run

It's Never Too Early...

It’s been less than 11 month since he was elected to his fifth-consecutive term in office, but Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is already soliciting more funds for another campaign.
In a letter Arpaio sent to supporters last week, the sheriff painstakingly lays out the vast left-wing conspiracy working against him - name dropping Rev. Al Sharpton, President Barack Obama, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and ACORN along with a few media outlets - and says he’s in need of financial support to fight these forces.
To reiterate the threat Sharpton poses (he’s visited Phoenix twice this year ...

SWAG Update: Early filers for 2010

I have been a bit remiss lately in updating the early filers with the Arizona Secretary of State for 2010. You can play along at home at http://www.azsos.gov/cfs/CommitteeSearch.aspx.

Since the last update, former Arizona Democratic Party chairman Jim Pederson and Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon have announced that they will not be a candidate in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. Former Tempe mayor and gay rights activist Neil Giuliano is exploring running for Governor as a Democrat (he was a Republican). Republican State Treasurer Dean Martin is making noises about running for Governor, and there are persistent rumors that Republican National Committeeman John Munger is biding his time waiting to announce that he is running for Governor.

Weekend insiders ...

Group wants to immigrate into meetings … A Washington, D.C., advocacy group that pushes for less immigration — legal and illegal — wants to sit in on meetings with Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors and investigates hate activity across the U.S.
The Republic has reported, Gordon is bringing the center's Heidi Beirich to help raise awareness about the presence of the state's hate groups, which the center says is on the rise. Beirich will meet with law-enforcement officials and the media Aug. 12-14.
Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, wants ...

Sheriff Joe widens search for information on Wilcoxes, Stapley and Phoenix attorney

Maricopa County officials aren't the only ones being asked to cough up documents for the Sheriff's Office.
Last week, MCSO submitted public-records requests to Phoenix officials, looking for information on County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox and her husband Earl; Supervisor Don Stapley, and attorney Tom Irvine, who works as contract counsel for the Board of Supervisors.
Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon said the requests are “a waste of thousands of taxpayer dollars to go on fishing expeditions that hurt his opponents, including the City of Phoenix, and myself.”
City officials believe the requests are too broad and plan to ask MCSO to narrow them.
MCSO asked the city Aviation ...

Sal Diciccio losing support among his strongest backers

The Arizona Republic is reporting that Phoenix City  Councilman Sal Diciccio’s strongest supporters are starting to have their doubts.

It didn’t take long–after ten years in the political wilderness and one electoral embarrassment after another, Diciccio’s backers in the firefighter’s union persuaded the city council, against their better judgment, to take on this infamous figure as one of their own back in February.

The criticism is centered around Diciccio’s determination to side with developers over neighborhood residents at every turn.

From the article:

“There are so many things out of the box that Sal has disappointed us on,” said neighborhood activist Jeff Fine, who donated $400 to DiCiccio’s election campaign.

Terry Goddard goes exploring, may attract a crowd

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, to no one's great surprise, will be filing an "exploratory committee" for governor in June. How do I know? I was contacted and asked to add my name to a list of endorsers.

Expect an announcement when the exploratory committee is filed.

Recent rumor has it that former Tempe Mayor Neil Giuliano is considering entering the Democratic primary for governor.

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon is perpetually rumored to be interested in entering the Democratic primary for governor.

Former Arizona Democratic Party Chairman and 2006 U.S. Senate candidate Jim Pederson is still exploring his options.

Rep. David Bradley (LD 28) is exploring his options as well. If he decides to run, it has been reported that he would resign his House seat sometime this summer to concentrate on his campaign.

Phoenix tax dollars spent on food, flowers, and resorts

The City of Phoenix has downsized by over 1000 employees, laying off at least 10, cut library hours, closed swimming pools, and demanded and received $40 million in “stimulus” money from the feds to pay for more light rail (which no one is riding we’re finding out) and handouts of $15,000 each to people who buy foreclosed homes.

Meanwhile, Phoenix City Council members and Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon have been spending your tax dollars like crazy on personal amenities for themselves - personal amenities that even most private companies wouldn’t be splurging on during these rough economic times. Wonder how long before the City of Phoenix announces a tax increase to pay for for - ahem, important things like infrastructure? Channel 15 did an investigative report into this wasteful spending, excerpted below:

A review of the City of Phoenix checkbooks by the ABC15 Investigators shows thousands of dollars spent at high-end resorts, restaurants, and even flowers.
